POSITION SUMMARY: 
These positions provide legal representation to prosecute individuals accused of crimes in District, Juvenile, or Superior Court. Organization
 
The Civil Rights Division is primarily responsible for enforcing federal statutes, constitutional provisions, and executive orders that prohibit, among other things, unlawful discrimination in education, employment, housing, police services, public accommodations and facilities, voting, and federally funded and conducted programs. The laws that the Division enforces also prohibit conduct by law enforcement agencies, as well as conditions of public residential institutions, such as health care and correctional facilities, that violate the constitution.
 
As the Deputy Assistant Attorney General (DAAG), the successful candidate:
 
Serves as consultant and advisor on all matters of major policies requiring the personal attention of the Assistant Attorney General (AAG).
 Reviews and supervises the work of one or more CRT sections and meets regularly with section managers to communicate the enforcement and policy priorities of the AAG and to ensure that each section's work aligns with those priorities.
 Advises on and decides questions of policy and procedure arising in connection with the initiation, conduct, and termination of civil rights litigation, both civil and criminal, subject to review by the AAG.
 Confers with, advises, and instructs senior members of CRT, special counsel, and other Division and Department attorneys on matters relating to the enforcement of statutes, constitutional provisions, executive orders, and other regulations assigned to CRT.
 
The DAAG Is expected to conceive and formulate policies and programs for elimination of unlawful practices of discrimination involving federally protected civil rights, anticipating, minimizing, or obviating wherever possible apparent federal and state conflicts with respect to enforcement of civil rights. In emergencies, conducts field surveys and inspection trips to troublesome areas in civil rights matters for the purpose of advising and aiding the AAG in the formulation of departmental policy and determining when the Department must take prosecutory or other corrective action.
 
Drafts, reviews, and comments on the Department's legislative program on civil rights, with a view to determining their adequacy under the Constitution and the need of such legislation in the enforcement of federally protected civil rights.
 
Confers with individuals and groups who call upon the Department in connection with civil rights matters, advises such individuals and groups thereon, and initiates appropriate action.

<div>The Conflicts Attorney is responsible for evaluating and resolving legal conflicts-of-interest for new business intake, matter openings, client updates, and lateral attorney onboarding. This role conducts complex conflicts analyses, advises attorneys and firm leadership on risk and ethics issues, and ensures compliance with professional responsibility rules and firm policies. The Conflicts Attorney also supports matter opening workflows, drafts waivers and ethical screens, reviews Outside Counsel Guidelines, and contributes to maintaining high-quality conflicts data and processes. 


The Conflicts Attorney will be responsible for&hellip;

<li>Identifying and analyzing actual and potential conflicts for existing and prospective clients by conducting in-depth research using internal systems and external databases (e.g., Hoover&rsquo;s, D&amp;B, Lexis, EDGAR) and interpreting results to assess business and ethical risks</li>
<li>Recommending and implementing conflict-resolution strategies, including ethical walls, disclosures, consent letters, and engagement modifications</li>
<li>Drafting and maintaining conflict waivers, disclosures, engagement letter language, and supporting documentation</li>
<li>Reviewing and analyzing Outside Counsel Guidelines and engagement letters for conflicts-related provisions; advise on restrictions, required screens, and necessary updates to internal data</li>
<li>Conducting conflicts analyses for lateral attorney candidates, recommending and implementing resolutions with Division Managers and the Ethics Committee, communicating with stakeholders to clear conflicts, and preparing required consent letters and documentation before and after onboarding</li>
<li>Educating attorneys and legal staff on ethical obligations, conflicts procedures, new business intake, and client relationship considerations</li>

Successful candidates will demonstrate&hellip;

<li>Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school and active bar status in MD, DC, CA, or NY</li>
<li>A minimum of 3 years of conflicts or professional responsibility experience in a mid-to-large, multi-practice law firm</li>
<li>Demonstrated ability to analyze complex legal relationships, business structures, and conflict scenarios</li>
<li>A minimum of 2 years of law practice experience in private practice strongly preferred</li>
<li>Proficiency with conflicts/new-business intake systems and strong research and analytical skills</li>
<li>Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to make persuasive arguments and present nuanced analyses to all levels of firm leadership</li>
<li>Strong negotiation skills and consultative approach when working with attorneys and staff</li>
<li>High level of discretion, judgment, and diplomacy in handling sensitive and confidential information</li>
<li>Strong attention to detail, client-service orientation, and responsiveness</li>
<li>Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment, manage competing priorities, and meet tight deadlines</li>

Pay Range for Candidates in Baltimore, MD:

$145,000 - $180,000 per year 


Pay Range for Candidates in Washington, DC:

$150,000 - $190,000 per year

The Appellate Division at the United States Attorney's Office for the District of Columbia has primary responsibility for the direct appeals of criminal convictions in the District of Columbia Court of Appeals and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit.
 
Job Description
 
The U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Columbia is unique in the size and the scope of its work. It serves as both the local and the federal prosecutor for the nation's capital. On the local side, AUSAs assigned to the Superior Court Division prosecute cases in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia ranging from misdemeanors to homicides, and appeals of those convictions are argued in the District of Columbia Court of Appeals (DCCA). On the federal side, AUSAs assigned to the Criminal Division prosecute federal crimes in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, and appeals of those convictions are argued in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. AUSAs assigned to the Appellate Division argue the direct appeals of all criminal convictions in both the local and federal Courts of Appeal. AUSAs in the Special Proceedings Division handle post-trial litigation involving habeas claims, record sealing, and other requests for extraordinary relief in the trial courts. The Civil Division further defends the United States in civil suits brought in the District of Columbia.
 
The United States Attorney's Office for the District of Columbia is accepting applications for attorneys to serve as Assistant United States Attorneys (AUSAs) in the Office's Appellate Division. The position involves significant legal writing responsibilities, including preparation of internal memoranda, briefs for trial courts and the courts of appeals, and other court filings. Appellate AUSAs will participate in moot courts and handle oral arguments before the appellate courts. Appellate AUSAs may also assist in trial-level litigation in cases of unusual complexity or importance.
 
AUSAs must possess the qualities necessary to excel in their mission to enforce the laws of the District of Columbia and the United States. These qualities include advocacy and communication skills; superior writing and analytical skills; the ability to manage a high-volume docket; and dedication to duty. Successful candidates will demonstrate the ability to work in a supportive and professional manner with other attorneys, support staff, investigative agencies, witnesses, and crime victims. They must also demonstrate their willingness to meet the high ethical standards expected of prosecutors in their interactions with opposing counsel and the courts.
 
Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress.

Qualifications
 
Required Qualifications: 
Applicants must possess a J.D. Degree (or equivalent), be an active member of the bar (any U.S. jurisdiction), and have at least 1 year post-J.D. (or equivalent) legal or other relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications: 
The ideal candidate will have a minimum GPA of 3.0, appellate litigation experience and/or substantive expertise in criminal law. Judicial clerkships, law review, moot court, clinical experience, and experience working cooperatively with a range of people are also preferred.

Salary Information: This is an excepted service attorney appointment under an Administrative Determined pay scale. Assistant United States Attorney's pay is administratively determined based, in part, on the number of years of professional attorney experience. The range of basic pay is $84,601 to $195,100 which includes 33.94% locality pay.
