<div><div><p>Law student volunteers in the Office of Immigration Litigation (OIL) will work closely with attorney&#8209;mentors on assignments that mirror the Office&rsquo;s district court and appellate practice. Responsibilities may include:</p><ul><p>
Conducting legal research and drafting memoranda on immigration, nationality, detention, and related issues.</p><p>
Drafting briefs and other pleadings for filing in federal courts, including dispositive motions and appellate submissions.</p><p>
Assisting with case preparation and litigation strategy, including reviewing records and supporting trial and oral argument preparation.</p><p>
Preparing and delivering a moot oral argument before a panel of experienced OIL attorneys.</p><p>
Attending OIL trainings, Division&#8209;wide programs, tours, and networking events, as schedules permit.</p><p>
Observing &ldquo;first cuts&rdquo; meetings where OIL leadership considers whether to seek further review in cases decided adversely to the government.</p></ul><p>

Organization

The Civil Rights Division is primarily responsible for enforcing federal statutes, constitutional provisions, and executive orders that prohibit, among other things, unlawful discrimination in education, employment, housing, police services, public accommodations and facilities, voting, and federally funded and conducted programs. The laws that the Division enforces also prohibit conduct by law enforcement agencies, as well as conditions of public residential institutions, such as health care and correctional facilities, that violate the constitution.

As the Deputy Assistant Attorney General (DAAG), the successful candidate:

Serves as consultant and advisor on all matters of major policies requiring the personal attention of the Assistant Attorney General (AAG).
<br>Reviews and supervises the work of one or more CRT sections and meets regularly with section managers to communicate the enforcement and policy priorities of the AAG and to ensure that each section's work aligns with those priorities.
<br>Advises on and decides questions of policy and procedure arising in connection with the initiation, conduct, and termination of civil rights litigation, both civil and criminal, subject to review by the AAG.
<br>Confers with, advises, and instructs senior members of CRT, special counsel, and other Division and Department attorneys on matters relating to the enforcement of statutes, constitutional provisions, executive orders, and other regulations assigned to CRT.

The DAAG Is expected to conceive and formulate policies and programs for elimination of unlawful practices of discrimination involving federally protected civil rights, anticipating, minimizing, or obviating wherever possible apparent federal and state conflicts with respect to enforcement of civil rights. In emergencies, conducts field surveys and inspection trips to troublesome areas in civil rights matters for the purpose of advising and aiding the AAG in the formulation of departmental policy and determining when the Department must take prosecutory or other corrective action.

Drafts, reviews, and comments on the Department's legislative program on civil rights, with a view to determining their adequacy under the Constitution and the need of such legislation in the enforcement of federally protected civil rights.

The Legislative Affairs Program Fellow will develop resources and execute strategic legislative activities to advance priority animal protection legislation. <p></p><ul><li>Because the D.C. Circuit entertains a large number of high-profile and sealed cases, the court attorney is subject to strict confidentiality requirements.</li>
<li>Must be a U.S. citizen or eligible to work in the United States.</li>

<li>Direct deposit of pay is required.</li>
<li>In addition, your continued employment is contingent upon the satisfactory completion of a background check. A full background investigation for a security clearance may be required.</li></ul><br>
<p></p><h3 class="jobSectionHeader"><b>Qualifications</b></h3>
<p>The caseload of the D.C. Circuit involves virtually every area of federal law and is unique in the number of cases filed against the executive branch. Because the court attorney must be able to advise the judges on difficult, varied, and important legal issues, the court is highly selective in its hiring. The court is looking for individuals who have demonstrated the ability to research and analyze complex legal issues in depth and to express themselves clearly, both orally and in writing.<br>

To qualify for the CL 30 level, you must be a member of the bar of a state or the District of Columbia and have at least three years of specialized experience after graduation from law school.<br>
<br>
The following may be credited as one year of specialized experience:
</p><ul>
<li>Graduation in the upper third of class from a law school accredited by the American Bar Association or the Association of American Law Schools;</li>
<li>Membership on the editorial board of a law review of such a school;</li>
<li>Graduation from a law school on the approved list of the American Bar Association or that of the Association of American Law Schools with an advanced degree (LLM or equivalent); or</li>
<li>Demonstrated proficiency in legal studies, which, in the opinion of the appointing official, is the equivalent of the above.</li></ul><br>
<p></p><div><h3 class="jobSectionHeader"><b>Education</b></h3>
<p>At a minimum, applicants must possess a J.D. degree as of the position's start date. A judicial clerkship or internship, law review membership, or comparable legal research and writing experience is desirable. Litigation experience is advantageous. Graduation in the top 25% of your law school is preferred.<br>
