Job description 
 
New York Legal Assistance Group (NYLAG) seeks a highly motivated Supervising Attorney for a full-time, temporary position. The Supervising Attorney will lead a team of Staff Attorneys and Paralegals primarily working on detained and non-detained removal defense and post-order work. The job requires substantive knowledge and experience working with removal defense, asylum-seeking families and minors, the intersection of criminal and immigration law, and overseeing the development and implementation of programming and contract management. Candidates will have a proactive ability to solve problems under time pressure, a strong commitment to providing client-centered services for clients experiencing trauma, and an ability to provide professional development and support to a team of attorneys, paralegals, and volunteers at various stages in their careers. 
The Supervisor will work within the Immigrant Protection Unit at NYLAG as a part of the unit leadership team assisting with the operations of the unit, grant reporting, and development of the team and unit. 
The Supervisor will report directly to the Director or Associate Director of the Unit. 
 
Duties and Responsibilities 
 
The Supervisor&rsquo;s responsibilities will include:<ul><li>

Temporary Supervising Attorney

<div>Reporting to the Director of the First Amendment Clinic at Cornell Law School, Mark Jackson, and Associate Director, Heather Murray, the Local Journalism Project (LJP) Attorney position is part of an exciting and innovative collaboration among Cornell, The Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press (RCFP), and the nonprofit news site Pittsburgh&rsquo;s Public Source to help convene journalists and media outlets in the region to discuss challenges, provide trainings on best practices and legal issues and to provide pro bono legal representation to those journalists and media outlets in connection with, and arising out of, their essential newsgathering activity. The LJP Attorney will also work on certain matters under the joint supervision of RCFP&rsquo;s PA-based Local Legal Initiative Attorney, Paula Knudsen Burke, and will work with Halle Stockton, Executive Director and Editor-In-Chief of Pittsburgh&rsquo;s Public Source.
The LJP Attorney will have primary responsibility for developing and managing a docket dedicated to providing legal services to support local journalism in the area. The LJP Attorney will work independently to manage a docket of matters and to partner with local law firms and non-profits, including RCFP, to represent the interests of media outlets that could not otherwise afford representation. The LJP Attorney will be tasked with affirmative outreach to media outlets, building and sustaining relationships with these outlets, and providing representation to aid investigative journalists to perform their watchdog function and to provide day-to-day commercial and organizational legal support.
The LJP Attorney will have a working and collaborative relationship with the Ithaca-based Clinic staff attorneys, but will have no formal teaching responsibilities. When appropriate, the LJP Attorney will work with students from the Cornell Law School First Amendment Clinic on active matters, to help these students become familiar with legal issues related to media in the Western Pennsylvania area, and to otherwise aid in their professional development.
This position is ideal for a candidate who is eager to use their prior background as an in-house counsel, a litigator or at a free press organization to help support and sustain local journalism in the Western Pennsylvania area. It calls for someone entrepreneurial, who is interested in both continuing the representation of our current client base and expanding that base.
The successful candidate will be based in Western Pennsylvania. This full-time position is for a two-year term, and is benefits eligible. Employment through the intended term, as well as possible reappointment, is contingent on successful performance and continued funding.
This position is generously funded by the Heinz Endowments and the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.
Responsibilities<ul><li>
Help manage and grow a docket of matters based in the Western Pennsylvania area, including by working with local media outlets to identify cases and issues that warrant the Clinic&rsquo;s attention, collaborating with other attorneys and advocacy groups to enhance the impact of the Clinic work, researching legal and factual questions, drafting legal papers, presenting oral argument and counseling and training media clients.</li><li>
Travel as required for litigation, conferences, speaking engagements and trips to Ithaca.</li></ul>
Minimum Qualifications
The LJP Attorney must have a J.D. or equivalent, be admitted to the Pennsylvania bar, and have a minimum of three years of relevant experience as a lawyer. Applicants should have excellent communication skills, both oral and written; excellent analytical skills; and the temperament to develop and work effectively with a network of media clients, outside lawyers and advocacy organizations. Applicants should also have the skills necessary to supervise and mentor law students and work collaboratively in a team-based environment. The applicant must also be a &ldquo;self-starter&rdquo; and have the ability to operate on their own, with light supervision.
Preferred Qualifications
Preference will be given to candidates who have experience representing the media; supervising other lawyers or law students; have strong relationships with organizations that the Clinic is likely to partner with&mdash;media enterprises, journalists, and free speech and other civil liberties organizations, and who speak a relevant foreign language.

Reports directly to the Chief Litigation Officer, the Directing Attorney &ndash; New York is a key member of DRA&rsquo;s management team who leads high impact litigation in New York and throughout the country while also mentoring and guiding our talented legal staff.
<h3 class="jobSectionHeader">Position Summary:</h3>
The Directing Attorney &ndash; New York, ensures efficient and effective management of a significant litigation case load, fosters high engagement and performance in staff assigned to their cases, and contributes to DRA&rsquo;s overall vision and direction through the management team.
<h3 class="jobSectionHeader">Essential Duties:</h3>
The following is a summary of essential duties.
<ul><li>Case Management
<ul><li>Lead litigator on major cases, including arguing major motions and/or supervising preparation by more junior attorneys for argument in major motions, acting as lead trial counsel and generally functioning as the lead lawyer on assigned cases.</li>
<li>Provide leadership and guidance to attorneys on assigned cases to ensure successful resolutions and/or results in litigation that benefit DRA&rsquo;s clients and mission, including providing guidance on litigation planning and case management throughout the lifecycle of each case</li>
<li>Ensure effective working relationships with plaintiffs, courts, and co-counsel on assigned cases</li>
<li>Ensure administrative and billing details are accurate and up to date on assigned cases</li>
<li>Ensure staff assigned to their cases have clear direction and feedback</li>
<li>Ensure recovery of attorneys&rsquo; fees and that cases are fee generating</li>
<li>Other duties as assigned</li>

Actively participate in management team to provide input and support to leadership decisions</li></ul><ul><li>
Supervise legal team members (possible direct reports include: litigation assistants, paralegals, summer law clerks, fellows, staff attorneys, and senior staff attorneys)</li></ul><ul><li>
Provide leadership and direction to DRA regarding other mission-critical activities (such as amicus briefs, intakes, and other non-litigation advocacy and related matters)</li></ul><ul><li>
At direction of the President &amp; CEO, provide support as needed for Board of Directors</li></ul><ul><li>
Participate as needed with special events including fundraising and staff engagement events</li></ul><ul><li>

Provide leadership to New York office staff, in coordination with any other New York managers, including identifying and implementing team and morale building opportunities.</li></ul>
<ul><li>In coordination with the CEO and CLO, network with legal and advocacy groups in New York and the Eastern U.S. to ensure community engagement and identification of legal issues.</li>
</ul></li></ul><h3 class="jobSectionHeader">Qualifications:</h3>
<ul><li>10+ years&rsquo; experience and demonstrated success litigating civil rights cases</li>
<li>2+ years case management and experience providing leadership to other attorneys</li>
<li>Excellent writing and communication skills</li>
<li>In-depth knowledge of legal principles and practices related to high impact or class action litigation</li>
<li>Self-directed with strong initiative, efficient time management, follow through, and flexibility around changing priorities and deadlines</li>
<li>Connection to disability or passion for our mission desirable, but extensive disability law experience not necessary</li>
<li>An active license in good standing with the New York Bar</li>
<li>While this position is hybrid (i.e. flexible remote work) routine physical presence in New York City required given the leadership role.</li>

This is a full time, exempt position with a salary range of $165,000 &ndash; $210,000.

POSITION OVERVIEW 
Sanctuary for Families, Center for Battered Women&rsquo;s Legal Services, the largest provider in the U.S. of legal services exclusively for victims of domestic violence and related forms of gender-based violence, seeks a dynamic individual with a commitment to working with victims and survivors. The Staff Attorney will handle housing matters such as eviction and HP actions in the housing courts of the five boroughs of New York City, lease termination matters, and legal advocacy on public housing and housing-related benefits and will work under the supervision of a supervising housing attorney. 
RESPONSIBILITIES<ul><li>
Represents victims of gender violence in housing court proceedings, including non-payments, holdovers, and HP actions.</li><li>
Represents victims of gender violence in other forums, including Article 78 proceedings in Supreme Court.</li><li>
Provides legal advocacy with respect to early lease terminations, public housing, housing-related benefits, and rental arrears assistance.</li><li>
Provides legal assistance and consultations to pro se litigants in housing law matters.</li><li>
Screens, advises, and advocates for clients in legal and non-legal forums.</li><li>
Creates and conduct trainings on housing law and policy.</li><li>
Represents Sanctuary for Families on task forces and other political and advocacy committees outside the agency and at community events.</li><li>
Supports training of junior staff members, law students, pro bono attorneys and Sanctuary staff.</li><li>
Attends and participates in inter-agency conferences and legal/ bar association committee meetings to keep abreast of developments in the areas of pro bono, domestic violence, and housing law.</li><li>
Facilitates clients' access to intra-agency and outside resources and administers the provision of direct financial assistance and donations to clients.</li><li>
Develops and conducts outreaches to under-served communities.</li><li>
Maintains statistics relating to client services for grant reporting purposes.</li><li>
Performs any other department or agency-related duties or special projects as directed by supervisor.</li><li>
Collaborates with all other projects within the legal center on housing, public benefits, and family law issues.</li><li>
Collaborates with Clinical staff on housing issues for clients.</li></ul>

2- 4 years&rsquo; experience of prior housing law knowledge and experience preferred.</li><li>
