Job Summary
Schaible’s Plumbing & Heating is a growing plumbing, HVAC, and mechanical contractor serving both residential and commercial clients across New Jersey and Eastern Pennsylvania. We are building a strong internal team and looking for a senior-level accountant who wants to take ownership, add value, and grow into a Controller role. As a key player in our team, you will support strategic decision-making through accurate financial reporting and analysis, all while fostering continuous improvement in our accounting processes.
Position Overview
We are looking for a hands-on Senior Accountant with construction and job costing experience. This role will be heavily involved in day-to-day accounting, financial reporting, and operational support, working directly with leadership and project managers.This is a key position with a clear path to a Controller-level role.
Responsibilities
- Own the month-end close process, including general ledger review, journal entries, accruals, and full balance sheet reconciliations
- Maintain accurate financial records in accordance with GAAP, with a strong focus on construction accounting and job costing
- Lead job cost accounting, including cost allocations, labor tracking, and detailed project-level profitability analysis
- Manage and maintain WIP schedules, revenue recognition, and cost-to-complete reporting
- Oversee all billing functions, including AIA/progress billing, time & materials billing, and contract invoicing
- Take ownership of accounts payable and receivable processes, including vendor management and collections oversight
- Reconcile bank accounts, credit cards, and financing accounts on a timely and consistent basis
- Interface directly with banks and financial institutions, including support for lending requirements, reporting packages, and cash management
- Oversee payroll coordination with a strong understanding of payroll processes, job cost integration, and labor reporting
- Maintain working knowledge of payroll tax filings and compliance requirements
- Support and monitor 401(k) reporting, including coordination with third-party administrators, contribution accuracy, and compliance
- Ensure subcontractor compliance, including tracking of lien waivers, certificates of insurance.
- Prepare internal financial statements and support external reporting, audits, and tax filings
- Partner directly with project managers and leadership to provide visibility into job performance, budgets, and cost control
- Identify and implement process improvements to strengthen financial reporting, controls, and overall efficiency.
Qualifications
- 5+ years of accounting experience (construction or job costing experience strongly preferred)
- Strong understanding of GAAP and financial reporting
- Experience with WIP schedules, revenue recognition, and construction billing (AIA)
- Solid understanding of payroll processes and related compliance
- Familiarity with 401(k) reporting and coordination with third-party administrators
- Proficient in Excel
- Sage RE 300experience is a plus
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Ability to work directly with leadership and operate in a hands-on environment

Pay: $95,000.00 - $105,000.00 per year
