Senior Communications Specialist

SUMMARY/POSITION OVERVIEW

The Senior Communications Specialist develops, edits, copyedits, and proofreads written communications across all ministry channels, including print, digital, and media. This role supports the consistency and quality of ministry messaging by ensuring clarity, theological integrity, and brand voice across written content.

The position works under the direction of the VP of Ministry Operations & Communications and collaborates with print, digital, and media teams to provide editorial support and maintain messaging consistency. The role focuses on content development, editing, and maintaining high editorial standards.

The role may also recommend SEO-informed improvements to support search visibility in collaboration with digital leadership and perform other duties as assigned.

Key Responsibilities

Content Development

  • Write and develop high-quality written communications across all ministry channels, including:
  • Website and magazine articles
  • Devotionals
  • Teaching curriculum materials
  • Campaign landing pages and modal copy (as assigned).
  • Fundraising and engagement communications (as assigned).
  • Product and program descriptions (shared responsibility).
  • Banner ad and promotional copy (as needed).
  • Media descriptions and related broadcast materials (as needed).
  • Other content as assigned.
  • Coordinate and review website article assignments in alignment with established content priorities.
  • Refresh and update existing content to ensure clarity and alignment with ministry priorities.
  • Review and refine donor, partner, and ministry testimonials to ensure clarity, consistency, and alignment with ministry voice.
  • Adjust testimonial content as needed to support engagement and fundraising communications.

Editorial Support & Quality Control

  • Provide editing, copyediting, and proofreading support for communications across all ministry channels (as needed).
  • Ensure consistency in tone, voice, grammar, formatting, and theological alignment.
  • Review submissions from print, digital, and media teams as provided to maintain brand and style consistency.
  • Uphold high editorial standards across ministry communications.

Digital Editorial Style Guide

  • Develop, document, and maintain the ministry’s Digital Editorial Style Guide for written content across digital platforms.
  • Establish standards for tone, voice, formatting, grammar, theological clarity, and content structure for website, email, and digital communications.
  • Provide guidance to internal teams and contributors to support consistent application of digital writing standards.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Digital Initiatives to ensure editorial standards align with digital publishing workflows and platform requirements.

Contract Writer Coordination & Editorial Oversight

  • Coordinate topic assignments for contract writers in alignment with established content priorities and VP direction.
  • Review submitted drafts for clarity, theological integrity, and messaging consistency.
  • Provide substantive edits and editorial feedback to strengthen content quality.
  • Monitor deadlines and support timely submission of assigned content.
  • Ensure adherence to established style and formatting standards.
  • Serve as the primary editorial point of contact for contract writers and external contributors.

Job Requirements & Qualifications

Faith & Mission Alignment

Portfolio Requirement

  • Candidates must provide 3–5 writing samples or a portfolio demonstrating strong editorial writing and editing across formats such as articles, web content, email communications, or campaign messaging.

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, English, Marketing, or a related field (or equivalent professional experience).
  • 4–6 years of professional experience in communications, content writing, editorial, or public relations.
  • Demonstrated experience writing and editing high-quality content across multiple channels (web, email, print, or social).

Core Skills

  • Exceptional writing, editing, copyediting, and proofreading ability.
  • Strong attention to clarity, tone, grammar, and message consistency.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines while maintaining editorial quality.
  • Experience collaborating with cross-functional teams.
  • Familiarity with WordPress or similar CMS platforms, email marketing tools, and basic SEO principles.

Preferred

  • Experience working in a ministry, nonprofit, or mission-driven organization.
  • Familiarity with SEO-informed content and digital publishing workflows.
