Position Overview

We are seeking a strategic and detail-oriented Senior Financial Analyst to support the financial health, sustainability, and operational excellence of our growing nonprofit organization.

This role plays a critical leadership function in managing multiple programs and grant budgets, strengthening financial procedures and policies, and partnering with program leadership to ensure responsible stewardship of resources.

The Senior Financial Analyst will engage in both day-to-day financial oversight and high-level financial planning, including early involvement in funding negotiations, proposal evaluation, and financial sustainability analysis of new opportunities. This role will also support restructuring and improving internal financial procedures, workflows, and policies to ensure consistency, compliance, and long-term organizational health.

This position reports directly to the Chief Operating Officer and works closely with the Financial Controller, Office Manager, and the administrative team.

Because we are a collaborative and mission-driven organization, this role may also contribute to cross-functional initiatives, beyond traditional finance functions.

Location & Work Structure

This is a hybrid position with regular in-office expectations in Sacramento, CA.

Candidates must reside within approximately one hour of Sacramento, as consistent in-person collaboration is required.

Key Responsibilities

Budget Management & Oversight

• Manage and monitor multiple programs and grant budgets with varying timelines and funding requirements
• Partner with Program Directors to track spending, forecast projections, and ensure budgets remain on track
• Conduct monthly budget-to-actual analysis and provide clear reporting to leadership
• Identify potential budget risks and recommend corrective action

Financial Operations & Administration

• Oversee day-to-day financial administration supporting program and grant activities
• Manage fund accounting across restricted and unrestricted funding sources
• Process and oversee invoicing to grantors and funding partners
• Ensure timely and accurate payments to vendors, contractors, and consultants
• Coordinate with accounting staff to maintain accurate coding, expense allocation, and documentation
• Support month-end and year-end close activities related to program financial operations
• Partner with administrative staff to streamline invoice processing, expense reporting, and purchasing procedures

Grant & Funder Compliance

• Prepare and support timely, accurate financial reporting to funders
• Ensure expenditures align with grant agreements and funding restrictions
• Oversee invoicing schedules and ensure timely billing and revenue recognition
• Support audits and financial reviews as needed

Financial Systems & Process Improvement

• Evaluate and improve internal financial procedures, policies, and workflows
• Support restructuring efforts to strengthen financial consistency and internal controls
• Partner with leadership to align financial systems with organizational growth
• Help ensure adherence to SOPs for new funding and grant onboarding

Strategic Financial Leadership

• Participate in early-stage funding conversations and proposal development
• Evaluate new funding opportunities to ensure alignment with organizational sustainability goals
• Provide financial modeling, scenario planning, and long-term budget forecasting
• Advise leadership on the financial viability and risk exposure of new initiatives

Collaboration & Operations

• Work closely with the Financial Controller to maintain strong internal controls
• Support finance-related cross-functional initiatives
• Contribute to organizational planning conversations as part of the leadership team

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, or related field (CPA or MBA preferred but not required)
• 5+ years of progressive finance experience, preferably within a nonprofit or grant-funded environment
• Demonstrated experience managing multiple restricted and unrestricted funding streams
• Experience in improving financial processes and internal controls
• Strong understanding of nonprofit budgeting, grant compliance, and funder reporting
• Experience partnering with program leaders in budget development and monitoring
• High level of discretion, integrity, and professionalism
• Strong analytical, communication, and leadership skills
• Highly proficient in MS Excel and Word for creating reports and documentation
• Salesforce experience is preferred but not necessary

Compensation

$85,000 – $105,000 annually, depending on experience and qualifications.

This range reflects competitive nonprofit compensation in California’s Central Valley for a strategic finance leadership role with budget oversight and systems improvement responsibilities.

Pay: $85,000.00 - $105,000.00 per year
