POSITION SUMMARY:
The Senior Manager of Communications is responsible for developing and executing strategic communication programs that elevate Reno Tahoe’s visibility and strengthen its reputation among media, industry and community audiences. This role provides forward-thinking leadership in how the destination tells its story, combining data, creativity and advocacy to position Reno Tahoe as a standout voice in the national and local media landscape. This position builds and maintains trusted relationships with media and industry stakeholders as an active member of the community and industry to generate meaningful coverage that advances Visit Reno Tahoe’s brand and mission. The Senior Manager of Communications ensures communications are purposeful, proactive and aligned with the organization’s strategic plan driving awareness, strengthening community confidence and promoting Reno Tahoe’s role as a leading four-season destination. This individual must be comfortable representing the organization publicly, including on-camera interviews, and be ready to respond with professionalism, clarity and enthusiasm at any time.
JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Develops and implements integrated communications strategies that increase awareness and positive sentiment for the Reno Tahoe destination, brand, events, attractions and tourism initiatives, including groups and the organization’s managed venues.
  • Serves as the primary media liaison for Visit Reno Tahoe, proactively cultivating and maintaining relationships with national, regional and local media.
  • Creates strategic, creative and compelling story angels and campaigns that distinguish Reno Tahoe in competitive travel, convention and lifestyle media markets.
  • Drafts, edits and distributes press releases, media alerts, talking points, digital communications, executive messaging and thought-leadership content.
  • Develops and executes PR and communication strategies that support meetings and conventions, sports and travel trade segments in coordination with sales leadership and agency partners.
  • Collaborates and participates in strategic discussion with the marketing and creative teams to integrate PR efforts with destination campaigns, partnerships, new initiatives and paid media for cohesive brand storytelling.
  • Analyzes performance and impact to inform strategy adjustments and demonstrate ROI.
  • Coordinates internal communication and messaging alignment across departments to ensure consistency in organizational priorities and public representation.
  • Monitors emerging issues, policies and community topics that may impact the destination, preparing proactive communication strategies and leadership guidance.
  • Monitors media trends, coverage and sentiment; providing regular reporting and actionable insights to leadership.
  • Manages Visit Reno Tahoe’s national and local PR firms, ensuring alignment with strategic goals, messaging, measurable outcomes, and cross-agency collaboration.
  • Oversees media coordination, FAM tours, and press opportunities in partnership with agencies and internal team members.
  • Oversees PR and communication strategies for the venues managed by Visit Reno Tahoe.
  • Serves as project lead for the development and implementation of Visit Reno Tahoe’s multi-year strategic plan and annual plan, coordinating timelines, deliverables and collaboration with department heads and outside consultants to ensure strategic alignment and accountability.
  • Develops and oversees the organization’s crisis communication protocols, ensuring readiness, accuracy and alignment across leadership and departments.
  • Prepares organizational leadership to ensure executives and key spokespeople are media-trained, prepared for interviews, and confident representing the organization
  • Develops and maintains advocacy messaging that reinforces Visit Reno Tahoe’s role as an economic driver and community partner.
  • Strengthens community and stakeholder relationships by maintaining visibility and ensuring clear, transparent and consistent communication.
  • Supports destination stewardship and resident sentiment initiatives through educational and advocacy-driven communication efforts.
  • Represents Visit Reno Tahoe at community meetings, industry trade shows, conferences, and media events as needed.
  • Maintains oversight of Visit Reno Tahoe’s organic social media presence to ensure consistent tone, strategic alignment and brand integrity across all owned channels.
  • Collaborates with content, creative and marketing teams to ensure alignment and determine opportunities.
  • Develops annual communication plans, measurable objectives and key performance indicators that align with Visit Reno Tahoe’s strategic plan and organizational goals.
  • Manages communication budgets, agency scopes and reporting.
  • Monitors research and performance for key messaging opportunities.
  • Consistently demonstrates positive, interpersonal relations with all constituencies; cooperate harmoniously with others in the accomplishment of the Visit Reno Tahoe’s strategic goals and objectives.
  • Maintains professional and productive atmosphere.
  • Reports to work as scheduled and/or requested.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or requested.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Development, Public Relations, Marketing, Communication, Advertising, Public Administration or related field. Master’s degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years of leadership experience gained within some segment of Public Relations, Journalism, Advertising, Marketing or Government Relations.
  • Must have a minimum 10 years of public relations, marketing or advertising experience.
  • Must be computer-literate and proficient in various software programs, such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Adobe.
  • Possess excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to effectively communicate, both in writing and verbally, with staff, supervisors, visitors, vendors, and the public.
  • Ability to review and understand all necessary documentation and reports.
  • Ability to understand and carry out verbal and written instructions; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships; work independently in the absence of supervision.
  • Ability to multi-task.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Regularly required to reach with hands and arms above and below shoulder level.
  • Frequently required to stand, walk, bend (at neck and waist), stoop, twist, squat, kneel, crawl, climb, push, and pull, and use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls.
  • Simple grasping as well as repetitive use of hands.
  • Frequently required to talk or hear.
  • Frequently required to lift and/or move up to 15 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close, distance, color, and peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

WORKING CONDITIONS /ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • May work near moving mechanical parts.
  • May be exposed to various room temperatures, fumes, airborne particles, chemicals, and vibration.
  • The noise level in the work environment may be {quiet, moderately loud, loud}.
