Senior Tax Accountant

Terry V. Aaseby, CPA, PLLC is a growing, family-oriented CPA firm serving individuals and small businesses throughout the greater Charlotte area and beyond. We provide tax preparation, tax planning, accounting, and advisory services to clients across a variety of industries.

About the Position

We are seeking an experienced Senior Tax Accountant to join our team. This position will be responsible for both preparing and reviewing tax returns, with a strong emphasis on reviewing, finalizing, and moving returns through completion.

The ideal candidate is accurate, efficient, responsive, and able to manage multiple priorities during tax season. This individual should be comfortable communicating directly with clients, researching tax matters, and helping less-experienced team members strengthen their tax preparation skills.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and review federal and state income tax returns for individuals, partnerships, S corporations, C corporations, trusts, estates, and nonprofit organizations
  • Perform detailed reviews of tax returns prepared by staff accountants, interns, and other team members
  • Finalize returns and help move engagements efficiently through the review and completion process
  • Communicate directly with clients to obtain information, answer questions, explain tax matters, and discuss completed returns
  • Participate in client meetings in person, by phone, or virtually as needed
  • Prepare tax projections and provide year-round tax planning support
  • Research federal and state tax issues and apply findings to client situations
  • Assist clients with IRS and state tax notices
  • Identify missing, inconsistent, or unusual information and follow up promptly
  • Maintain accurate and complete documentation within client files
  • Help train and provide guidance to interns and less-experienced team members
  • Collaborate with CPAs, preparers, administrative staff, and firm leadership to meet internal and external deadlines
  • Assist with accounting-related work when needed
  • Provide input on processes and workflow improvements

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or a related field
  • At least two years of public accounting experience
  • At least two years of tax preparation and review experience
  • Demonstrated experience reviewing tax returns prepared by others
  • Experience preparing individual, partnership, S corporation, C corporation, trust, estate, and nonprofit returns
  • Strong understanding of federal and state income taxation
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy
  • Ability to work efficiently while managing multiple clients and deadlines
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to communicate professionally and responsively with clients and team members
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and general accounting technology

Preferred Qualifications

  • Active CPA license or progress toward CPA licensure
  • Enrolled Agent designation
  • Experience with ProConnect Tax, QuickBooks Online, QuickBooks Desktop, and Monday.com
  • Experience preparing tax projections and responding to tax notices
  • Experience training or providing guidance to junior staff and interns

Schedule

This is a full-time, primarily in-office position at our Matthews location.

  • Approximately 30–40 hours per week outside tax season
  • Approximately 40–60 hours per week during tax season
  • Saturday hours during tax season are welcomed but not required
  • Flexible arrival and departure times may be available based on workload, deadlines, and client needs
  • Limited work-from-home flexibility may be discussed based on experience, training, performance, and the needs of the firm

Compensation and Benefits

  • Starting salary of $70,000, with higher compensation based on the candidate’s experience and qualifications
