SENIOR VISIBILITY & COMMUNICATIONS PRODUCTION ASSISTANT

Background

The United Nations Human Settlements Programme, UN-Habitat, is the agency for human settlements. It is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate shelter for all. UN-Habitat has been a partner with the number of ministries at national and provincial levels, development partners, civil society organizations and academia.

UN-Habitat Pakistan Country Programme Pakistan, lays down the roadmap for achieving the New Urban Agenda focusing on right to adequate housing, universal access to safe and affordable drinking water and sanitation and other basic services, sustainable economic growth, building resilience and protection and conservation of natural habitat as well as Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) particularly SDG11 aiming to make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable. The Country Programme is aligned with the Pakistan United Nations Sustainable Development Framework (UNSDF 2023-2027) One UN Programme (OP-III).

UN-Habitat is committed to the transformative goal of "Leaving No One Behind" with focus on enhancing access to adequate housing and basic services to promote inclusive prosperity and eradicate poverty and signed an agreement of contribution with government of Netherlands to implement a project in the five cities (Haripur, Kohat, Peshawar, Karachi and Quetta) with Afghan refugee’s concentration to empower and support both communities in selected settlements by promoting inclusive and sustainable urban development that prioritizes issues relating to housing and overcrowding, tenure insecurity, infrastructure, basic services and living conditions, economic opportunities, social cohesion and integration and improved living conditions, including preventing gender-based violence.

Objectives

The Senior Communications Assistant will support the overall communications, visibility, and outreach efforts for UN-Habitat Pakistan’s projects, ensuring alignment with UN-Habitat’s global communications strategy. The incumbent will develop high-quality content, manage visibility efforts, and strengthen media and public engagement to enhance awareness and impact.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the supervision of the CTA, and under the guidance of the HPM/DPM, the Senior Visibility & Communications Production Assistant will perform the below tasks:

Supporting project communication planning and monitoring

  • Become acquainted with UN-Habitat’s corporate communication, branding and visibility guidelines and UN-Habitat Pakistan’s communication plan
  • Contribute to UN-Habitat’s Pakistan communication plan and its monitoring
  • Provide inputs to the project communication strategy and plan
  • Support to ensure branding and visibility compliance across all communication materials

Research and produce content for a variety of communication materials

  • Research and produce compelling content, including press releases, success stories, human interest stories, blog posts, reports, social media posts, and newsletters.
  • Support in developing case studies and conducting lesson-learning events to document best practices.
  • Support for preparing infographics, briefing notes, visual presentations, and basic maps
  • Utilize visual storytelling techniques to enhance impact across digital and print media.
  • Coordinate with local and national media and develop media kits and promotional materials to share with stakeholders and partners.
  • Assist in capturing high-quality photographs and videos from field activities, ensuring impactful storytelling.
  • Assist in editing and production of videos, short documentaries, and multimedia stories to showcase project achievements.
  • Contribute with innovative communication ideas
  • Make periodic field visits to support the completion of the above tasks

Supporting knowledge management and sharing

  • Assist to ensure all project communication materials are archived systematically.
  • Support to maintain a well-organized photo and video archive for project documentation and visibility.
  • Provide assistance in documentation and knowledge-sharing requirements
  • Research communication materials of project-relevant partners, donor agencies, UN agencies, government partners, civil society organizations, and the media.
  • Support UN-Habitat’s communication efforts with selected partners, agencies, organizations.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

A first-level university degree (bachelor’s degree or equivalent) in Journalism, Public Relations, Development Studies, Mass communications or relevant fields.

Experience:

  • Minimum 4 years of relevant experience in communication, media, public relations, or related fields.
  • Experience in photography, videography, and video editing is desirable.
  • Prior experience working with international organizations, UN agencies, or humanitarian/development projects is an asset.
  • Experience with national or international NGOs is an advantage.
  • Experience with urban issues, such as urban poverty reduction, is an advantage.

Technical skills:

  • Strong storytelling and content writing abilities for multiple platforms.
  • Ability to conceptualize compelling documents/ tools for print and digital media.
  • Strong ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • Familiarity with development communication strategies and advocacy campaigns is an advantage.
  • Experienced in developing case studies, drafting stories of change, and facilitating lesson-learning events.
  • Research on urban issues is an advantage.
  • Applicants can submit a portfolio of writing samples and multimedia work.

Language

  • Written and spoken fluency in English and Urdu is required. Other local language e.g. Pashto preferred.

Other skills

  • Proficient in MS Office, email communication.
  • Digital and social media management tools (Meta Business Suite, Buffer etc.)
  • Well versed with maintaining organizational visibility, donor outreach, hands-on at knowledge sharing platform such LinkedIn etc., Instagram (visual storytelling), X/Twitter (short advocacy messaging) and YouTube (video storytelling)
