Solid Waste Cashier

Position Summary

Collect fees related to the weighing of all vehicles entering and leaving the landfill; maintain a variety of records and reports relative to landfill operations; give assistance and direction to landfill users and Convenience Centers.

Essential and Supplemental Functions

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Essential functions may include but are not limited to the functions listed below. Must be able to perform the essential functions of the job with or without a reasonable accommodation.


  • Perform cashiering duties at the City landfill; collect user fees and issue receipts; provide information to users regarding landfill policies and procedures.
  • Screen incoming vehicles for adherence to a variety of landfill regulations including hazardous waste and transport rules and regulations; determine classification of vehicle and refuse; direct vehicle to appropriate area.
  • Weigh all vehicles entering and leaving the landfill; determine if vehicles can enter the landfill area; explain weight limits and regulations to users.
  • Maintain a variety of records concerning the landfill and weighmaster operations; maintain records for vehicle number, weight and mileage; prepare statistical reports as required.
  • Prepare charge tickets for users who have landfill charge accounts; redeem appropriate coupons.
  • Answer telephone calls and provide requested information to the general public as necessary.
  • Maintain work area; straighten office materials.
SUPPLEMENTAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

Minimum Education, Experience And Additional Requirements

Education directly related to the minimum requirements below may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

High school diploma or GED; and

Two (2) years of cash handling experience.

Customer service experience preferred.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

Possession of a valid New Mexico Driver's License or the ability to obtain by date of hire.
Possession of a City Operator's Permit (COP) within 6 months from date of hire.
Possession of a valid City's Cash Handling Certificate within thirty (30) days from date of hire.
Required to work weekends and holidays.


Working Conditions

Environmental:
Outdoor and landfill environment; work around heavy equipment; exposure to noise, dust, grease, smoke, fumes, gases, disagreeable odors, potentially hazardous chemicals, waste and infectious materials; inclement weather conditions.

Physical:
Essential and supplemental functions may require heavy lifting; walking, standing and sitting for prolonged periods.
