Hargrave Military Academy is undertaking a historic expansion of its athletic programs, adding or expanding fencing, football, swimming, lacrosse, soccer, and baseball alongside its flagship basketball program. This expansion is a cornerstone of the Academy’s enrollment growth strategy and requires a dedicated professional to amplify Hargrave Athletics’ visibility, reach, and brand impact.
The Sports Marketing Coordinator is a newly created hybrid role that combines modern athletics marketing with traditional sports information functions insofar as those sports information functions drive or support external messaging efforts. The primary aim of this hire is to tell the story of Hargrave Athletics in a way that excites prospective families, engages recruiting channels, energizes alumni, and positions Hargrave as a premier destination for student-athletes. The ideal candidate is equal parts storyteller, content creator, and strategist, someone who can produce a highlight reel at 10 PM on a Friday night and polish a recruiting pitch deck on Monday morning.
This is a highly independent position. You will operate with clear performance expectations and minimal daily oversight. The right candidate thrives in that environment.
Content creation and athletics storytelling are the core of this role. You will be physically present at games, matches, and practices across all sports programs, capturing the content that fuels recruiting and builds program identity. This means sidelines, pools, mats, and fields, not a desk.
Capture sufficient content across all sports programs, including photo and short-form video to sustain an effective posting cadence between events.
Organize and maintain the athletics media library as a long-term institutional asset.
Plan and produce testimonial and spotlight content featuring coaches, athletes, and prominent athletic alumni for cross-departmental functions.
Manage live coverage and streaming of significant events.
Generate social media across platforms that reach parents and prospective student-athletes.
Monitor how peer programs and competitor schools present themselves across these channels and bring relevant intelligence back to the marketing and athletics leadership team.
Maintain and update the athletics section of hargrave.edu, including coach spotlights, program pages, camp announcements, news stories, and recruiting landing pages.
Support the coaching staff with ready-to-use content packages: social assets, athlete spotlights, and program highlights that extend each coach’s reach.
Where appropriate, develop frameworks that enable athletes themselves to generate and share authentic content that benefits both the program and their personal recruiting profiles.
Aid the marketing production staff in generating professional materials for prospect engagements.
Create sport-specific landing pages that feed qualified athletic inquiries into the admissions pipeline.
Track and report on athletics content performance, including engagement metrics, inquiry attribution, and audience growth.
The sports information function supports the marketing operation with accurate, timely, and well-organized program data. Coaches and assistant coaches are responsible for providing game outcomes, stats, and relevant details in a timely manner. The Sports Marketing Coordinator’s job is to receive that information and execute publication without delay.
Maintain current rosters, schedules, and program records for all sports across the website and institutional channels.
Publish game outcomes, score updates, and performance summaries promptly upon receipt from coaching staff.
Distribute results to regional media contacts and maintain a working press list to support earned media coverage of Hargrave Athletics.
Maintain the historical record of athletic results, honors, and achievements.
Coordinate with coaches to ensure the information pipeline stays current and reliable.
2+ years in athletics communications or sports marketing.
Experience with CMS platforms (Sidearm, WordPress, or similar).
Experience with digital marketing tools and graphic design software. (BOXOUT, Canva, InDesign, etc.)
Demonstrated ability to produce high-quality written, photo, and video content under deadline pressure.
Video production skills, including shooting, editing, and live-streaming
Proficiency with social media management and audience development across major platforms.
Strong organizational skills, managing multiple competing requirements and deadlines simultaneously.
Willingness to work evenings and weekends as required by the athletic schedule.
Familiarity with NIL considerations and how institutional content intersects with student-athlete personal branding, particularly at the post-graduate level.
Relationships with regional sports media, recruiting services, or athletics networks.
This is a ground-floor opportunity to build something from scratch. Hargrave is investing in facilities, coaching talent, and competitive programs across multiple sports. The person who fills this role will shape Hargrave Athletics’ public identity from day one, defining the voice, building the content engine, growing the audience, and directly impacting enrollment growth at a school with a 117-year history.
The military academy setting is not incidental. It is the differentiator. Families choosing Hargrave are choosing a specific kind of development for their son, and the content this role produces should make that case compellingly and consistently across every platform and touchpoint.
Founded in 1909, Hargrave is a Christian, college-preparatory boarding and day school for young men in grades 7–12 and post-graduate in Chatham, Virginia. The Academy develops leaders of character through four pillars: Academics, Athletics, Character & Leadership, and Faith. With 100% college acceptance and over $4M in scholarships earned annually, Hargrave’s elite sports expansion reflects a strategic commitment to building competitive programs that attract talented student-athletes and their families.
Competitive salary commensurate with experience. Comprehensive benefits (health, dental, vision). Professional development opportunities. Meals provided during the academic year. On-campus housing may be available.
