Director of Special Programs has the primary responsibilities of managing student discipline and civility strategies, providing support to students through the Student Emergency Fund and Bearcat Food Pantry. Serving on the Student Affairs Leadership Team (SALT) and reporting to the Assistant Vice President of Student Affairs, this position coordinates activities and processes related to student conduct, with a major focus on implementing student judicial procedures, supervising the administrative coordination of the Campus Intervention Team (CIT) and oversight of the Bearcat Food Pantry. The Director of Special Programs builds strong, positive relationships with Academic Affairs; the Office of Diversity, Compliance & Equity Initiatives, as well as works in close collaboration with units and officials reporting to the AVP of Student Affairs: Early Learning Center, Student Disability Services, Counseling Center, Health and Wellness and the Office of the Dean of Students. The Director will oversee, manage and distribute a budget of over $700,000 in grants to support students in need.

Further, the Director provides leadership, vision, and direct oversight of all student conduct services and programming, while playing a critical role in advocating for a fair process, encouraging student development, assisting with conflict intervention, facilitating solutions, and collaborating with campus and community stakeholders. This position supervises three direct reports: Assistant Director of Student Veteran Support/CUNY LEADS Job Developer, Assistant Director of Housing/Residence Life, and the Assistant Director of Student Advocacy & Support. This position will report to Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs.

Essential job duties (not limited to):

  • Conducts initial student conduct investigations and mediation meetings; manages confidential disciplinary communication and correspondence;
  • Serves as Chief Conduct Officer by conducting one-one-one meetings with students to discuss alleged violations of the Student Conduct Code, hears perspectives, explores personal responsibility, hold students accountable, and provides educational and restorative outcomes, where appropriate; researches and suggests a range of sanctions in response to student conduct infractions; maintains student conduct records;
  • Provide primary support to the Assistant Vice President/Associate Dean of Students in administration of the student conduct system, any disciplinary publications and policies, coordination of assessment of conduct work;
  • Coordinates and manages all student conduct hearings in accordance with best practice and due process of the Student Code of Conduct as outlined in Article XV of the Bylaws of the City University of New York (CUNY);
  • Assists in the campus-wide excused absences process, medical withdrawals and Dean’s Certification;
  • Manages confidential record management software system to effectively record and track student judicial cases and ongoing trends;
  • Designs and facilitates assessment initiatives to produce information on student conduct and behavioral trends in order to create proactive, preventative programs and education;
  • Serves as a key member of the Campus Intervention Team (CIT); supervises and coordinates case assignments and follow-through;
  • Supervises the Assistant Director for Student Advocacy & Support, the Assistant Director for Residence Life and Housing and the Assistant Director for Student Veteran Support/CUNY LEADS Job Developer;
  • Allocates and manages student emergency fund; facilitates the program’s reporting and assessment; manage budgets of more than $700,000 and seek out grant opportunities to augment existing budgets.
  • Co-chairs and fulfills the mission of the Student Affairs Sexual Harassment and Assault Prevention Committee and serves as the Deputy Title IX Officer providing assistance with Title IX matters;
  • Manage the Bearcat Food Pantry; including oversight of ordering food, ensure staffing, promotion and data tracking.
  • Work collaboratively with College Foundation to maintain existing donors and develop new ones to support students with the student emergency fund, food insecurity, and housing instability.

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s degree and eight years’ related experience required.

Candidates must possess a clear understanding of student development and the importance of co-curricular programming to student learning. Additionally, the successful candidate must work collaboratively with all levels of students, staff, faculty, and a wide variety of campus stakeholders. Further, the ideal candidate must possess demonstrated skills in program development and the ability to motivate and promote student success. The Director must be able to work some evening and weekend hours.

Preferred Job Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of theories and research in student development, conflict resolution; mediation, social justice, due process, and other legal issues in higher education;
  • Ability to produce written communication reports, proposals, professional correspondence, presentation, and website edits;
  • Ability to multi-task and effectively manage complex caseload.

  • Assists senior management in providing leadership, developing policy, conducting strategic planning, and representing student affairs in various professional activities
  • Evaluates the effectiveness of the portfolio of student services in supporting divisional and College-wide goals; oversees data collection, tracking, and reporting systems
  • Manages fiscal and human resources; may oversee grant management activities for selected programs
  • Performs related duties as assigned.
