Student Wingspan Senior Supplemental Instruction Leader

Position Overview

KU’s Wingspan: Center for Learning and Writing Support offers a portfolio of collaborative, innovative academic support programs and services to students, faculty, and staff. Wingspan provides individual and group support through its Peer Academic Coaching program, Supplemental Instruction (SI) program, Tutoring Services, and Writing Center Services. The Wingspan is a part of the University Academic Support Centers (UASC), a comprehensive student support program consisting of two unique centers designed to strengthen the academic skills and written communication of students at the University of Kansas. UASC supports the University’s commitment to the academic success and holistic development of students. UASC programs encourage student participation both in and out of the classroom, support academic and personal development, and link students to other campus and community resources for academic and personal support and development. University Academic Support Centers is a department within Academic Affairs.

The Senior SI Leader is an SI Leader who has at least one semester of experience working in the SI Leader role. Senior SI Leaders assist the Supplemental Instruction Manager with the ongoing training, support, and observation of their peer SI Leaders. This role includes developing leadership skills among the SI team, offering best practices for facilitating sessions, and acting as a resource for SI Leaders. The Senior SI Leader helps foster a collaborative learning and leadership environment within the SI program. Senior SI Leaders will also facilitate biweekly professional development staff meetings for peer SI Leaders, provide feedback on planning sheets, and observe sessions.

Additionally, Senior SI Leaders will also support their SI course by leading engaging and collaborative study sessions for one specific class. Senior SI Leaders must be available to attend the lectures and then prepare for study sessions that are held twice a week. To prepare for their roles, Senior SI Leaders are expected to attend: Senior SI Leader Training prior to the start of the semester, as well as the multi-day SI Leader training prior to the start of their sessions. Senior SI Leaders are expected to work 12 – 15 hours per week for the full length of the Fall 2026 semester, excluding academic breaks.

Job Description

40% - Facilitate Weekly SI Sessions and All Class Lecture
  • Plan and lead structured study sessions that are interactive and encourage student participation.
  • Develop practice problems, discussion questions, study guides, and other instructional materials to support learning during SI sessions.
  • Attend all class lectures for the designated course every week to be familiar with all homework, exams, and assignments in the selected class.
30% - Mentor New and Current SI Leaders
  • Act as a peer mentor to new and returning SI Leaders by offering support, sharing effective facilitation techniques, and guiding them through challenges.
  • Provide advice on session planning, student engagement, and classroom dynamics in biweekly staff meetings and as needed.
  • Attend and observe other SI Leaders' sessions, providing constructive feedback on session facilitation, student engagement, and classroom management.
20% - Collaborate with Faculty and SI Manager
  • Communicate regularly with faculty regarding upcoming exams, quizzes, and any areas of concern for students.
  • Communicate with the SI Manager regarding student needs, the performance of SI Leaders, and general updates about the program.
  • Attend all biweekly meetings with the SI Manager and assist the SI Manager with all required SI Leader trainings and meetings to develop leadership and facilitation skills.
10% - Promote SI Sessions
  • Actively promote SI sessions to students by making announcements in class, sending emails, or using other communication tools to encourage attendance.

Required Qualifications

  • Employed as an SI Leader for at least 1 semester in the Wingspan: Center for Learning and Writing Support.
  • A minimum of a B letter grade in the selected class.
  • Ability to work 12–15 hours per week, including afternoon and evening availability for sessions, meetings, and observations.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, including previous work experience demonstrating the ability to provide constructive feedback.
  • Demonstrated consistent attendance and follow-through during SI Leader employment as evidenced by work history.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience mentoring or training peers.
  • Leadership experience in student organizations, clubs, or teams.
  • Previous experience demonstrating the ability to manage multiple priorities as shown in application materials.
  • Experience observing and evaluating teaching or learning.

Position Requirements

During the semester term of the appointment, the student hourly must be enrolled in no fewer than 6 credit hours. For summer periods the student hourly must: (1) have been enrolled in no less than 6 hours in the past spring semester or (2) be pre-enrolled in the upcoming fall semester in no less than 6 hours or (3) be enrolled in summer session or (4) be admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester. Student Hourlies may be undergraduate or graduate students. (Exceptions granted for GRA/GTA/GA appointments DO NOT apply to Student Hourly appointments).

Employment Conditions

(1) Student employees are not eligible for remote work arrangements unless an exception is approved by the unit leadership and HR.

(2) This is an hourly/non-exempt position. A student employee cannot hold an hourly/non-exempt position and a salaried/exempt graduate or undergraduate position (GRA/GTA/GA/RUA/RGA) concurrently.
