Substitute Teacher, Short-term

Position Overview

Beechwood School is seeking individuals to work as substitute teachers. These teaching positions are for on-call classroom teaching in the event a regularly employed staff member is absent. Our grade levels for instruction range from Transitional Kindergarten through 8th grade. Class sizes are small (approx. 18 student/ class) with a school day that ranges from 8:10 am - 3:25pm. Coverage would consist of both scheduled and unscheduled teacher absences.

Responsibilities for a Short-term Substitute Teacher

• Provide academic instruction in the classroom, following a lesson plan (teacher provided)
• Monitor, manage, and supervise children using appropriate health and safety procedures
• Carry out additional supervisory duties which may include recess and lunch duties.

Qualifications for a Day-to-Day Substitute Teacher

• Experience working in an educational setting strongly preferred but not required
• Must pass a criminal background check
• Comfortable with basic classroom management
• Ability to interact with children and adults

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

• Ability to work in-person, on school site
• Occasional outdoor supervision
• Equipment used (school provided): Laptop computer or ipad, projector, printer/copy machine
• Essential physical tasks: Some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling; and significant fine finger dexterity. This job requires approximately 35% sitting, 10% walking, and 55% standing
• Must be able to be on campus in person

About the Beechwood School

Beechwood is a non-profit private school community of 170 students, 30 staff members, and over 100 families. We first opened our doors in 1986 to 15 kindergarteners and 15 first graders. The two classes met in a portable building on a site next to the railroad tracks near the Onetta Harris Community Center.

Now the school includes one class per grade from Transitional Kindergarten through Eighth Grade on a sprawling permanent campus. Beechwood offers its young learners a safe, nurturing environment that addresses the academic and social needs of each child.
