Introduction:
We seek an experienced Assistant Director of Instructional Design to lead digital content strategy and learning management operations across statewide college and career advising initiatives, including Texas OnCourse, ApplyTexas, My Texas Future, and ADVi. This role provides leadership to a team of instructional designers and editors, translating stakeholder needs into innovative, high-quality learning solutions that are accessible and user-centered. The Assistant Director will manage multiple concurrent projects, ensure alignment with agency priorities, and collaborate with internal and external partners to strengthen postsecondary and workforce readiness across Texas.
General Description:
The Assistant Director of Instructional Design is responsible for supporting instructional design strategy, digital content development, and learning management system operations across all College and Career Advising (CCA) products and initiatives—including Texas OnCourse, ApplyTexas, My Texas Future, ADVi, and related resources. This role supervises instructional designers and editors, translating stakeholder needs into innovative, accessible, and high-quality learning solutions. The Assistant Director manages multiple concurrent projects, ensures alignment with agency priorities, and promotes team growth and collaboration. The position reports to the Senior Director, Learning Operations and Delivery and works under minimal supervision with extensive latitude for initiative and independent judgment.
General Duties and Responsibilities:
General duties and responsibilities encompass three main categories of focus: (1) Team Leadership & Development, (2) Instructional Design & Project Management, and (3) Strategic Planning & Stakeholder Engagement.
Team Leadership & Development
- Supervises, mentors, and evaluates instructional designers, editors, and related staff across CCA initiatives.
- Provides guidance and coaching, allocates and oversees work, manages work schedules, and promotes career-growth opportunities.
- Builds a collaborative, innovative, and supportive team culture.
Instructional Design & Project Management
- Oversees the design and development of engaging digital learning experiences across CCA platforms (e.g., interactive lessons, assessments, multimedia, H5P activities).
- Applies user-centered and backward design methodologies to ensure accessibility, usability, and effectiveness.
- Manages the coordination of multiple, concurrent projects, monitoring timelines, deliverables, and adherence to quality standards.
- Ensures compliance with accessibility laws, usability requirements, and agency guidelines.
- Tracks and reports project progress to leadership and stakeholders, proactively addressing risks and challenges.
- Ensures the effective integration of learning design with platforms such as WordPress, Canvas, HTML, H5P, Vyond, and other e-learning tools.
Strategic Planning & Stakeholder Engagement
- Supports the development and implementation of a comprehensive instructional design strategy in consultation with senior leadership.
- Researches and continually monitors the instructional and digital technology environments for trends.
- Collaborates with higher education institutions, K–12 partners, and other stakeholders to ensure content meets diverse user needs.
- Serves as a point of contact for instructional design with internal teams, agency leadership, and external partners.
- Performs other related duties as assigned to support the goals of the College and Career Advising Division and agency priorities.
- This position is required to report to the office five days per week.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of instructional design models, strategies, techniques, and technologies.
- Knowledge of learning processes and implications for development of effective instruction.
- Knowledge of current best practices in educational development and pedagogy for adult professionals.
- Knowledge of programming and skills in Open edX, or other learning management system.
- Ability to develop effective instructional materials for a variety of learning tasks, learner characteristics, disciplines, and learning environments.
- Ability to communicate clearly, both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to demonstrate flexibility and effectiveness in dealing with ambiguity.

Qualifications
Required Minimum Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
- At least four years of experience in digital content design, instructional design, instructional technology, or direct teaching in online or hybrid learning environments.
- Experience delivering active-learning workshops for teachers and advising professionals.
- Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.
Preferred:
- Master’s degree in Instructional Design, Educational Psychology, Curriculum and Instruction, or related field.
- Experience working in a higher education/university environment.
- More than five years of experience in instructional design, technology, or consultation in an educational environment.
- Proven ability to stay current with innovations in learning science, pedagogy and rapidly changing technologies.
- Knowledge of statewide and national educational landscape, particularly high school to college and workforce transition.
- Experience designing and integrating continuous improvement processes.
- Data science and/or visualization skills.
- Demonstrated experience with Adobe InDesign, CSS, user-centered design and frameworks, including backwards design and design thinking.
- Experience with current project management methodologies.
- Advanced Canvas and WordPress design skills.
