Job Duties
The Court and Legal Services Section operates to ensure the Virginia statutes and Virginia Department of Corrections policies and procedures governing the prisoner sentence computation process are accurately applied and that computations of sentences result in the establishment of accurate release dates for prisoners confined within the Virginia Department of Corrections and the local jails of Virgini
Evaluates, analyzes and interprets all incoming documentation including jail credits, court orders, pre/post sentence investigation reports, Virginia and FBI criminal histories, parole information, disciplinary reports, class level evaluations and other legal documents regarding assigned offender caseloads to determine appropriate action impacting the accurate calculation of the offender’s release dates.
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent. Demonstrated basic knowledge of the Code of Virginia as it pertains to criminal sentencing. Demonstrated ability to comprehend and interpret legal documents and policies. Demonstrated working skills in operating automated equipment. Ability to work independently and analyze and resolve problems with general guidance from supervision. Ability to adapt to changes in procedures, priorities and the automated system. Ability to communicate effectively and professionally both orally and in writing.
Additional Considerations
Advanced knowledge in criminal justice, corrections or related fields. Experience in a field related to criminal justice, especially in criminal procedures and records processes. Some experience with data entry. Virginia Department of Corrections experience, especially in the area of adult institutions, classification, records or casework management is beneficial.
