Description of Work

The teacher is responsible for identifying, designing, and implementing appropriate educational and vocational services for residents on his/her caseload. The teacher develops specific training objectives and activities that promote learning within classroom settings and natural environments, including locations in the community. The teacher assesses, prioritizes, designs and implements training in the areas of domestic/self-care, social/communications, leisure, vocations, community living, and functional academics.

In addition to direct training responsibilities, the teacher is responsible for supervising paraprofessional while in the learning environments for which the teacher is responsible. Paraprofessional staff includes Trainer I’s, and Trainer II’s.

The teacher is assigned to a caseload and serves as part of an interdisciplinary team. The teacher provides consultation and assistance to Trainer I and II staff working in the vocational department. The teacher will ensure all residents are participating in the career development process to determine their interest in pursuing work, strengths and interests, and necessary training and supports to reach work goals.

The teacher will provide instruction to facilitate social/work related behaviors, enable people living at J. Iverson Riddle to engage in real vocational training experiences and provide them with employment opportunities to achieve their employment goals.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Salary Range: $42,200.00 – $69,888.00

Recruitment Range: $42,000.00 - $69,888.00

School Educator positions are based solely on the candidate selected in regards to education level and years of creditable experience. This means that even though this position is currently classified as School Educator I (bachelor's level), JIRDC is also accepting School Educator II applicants (master’s level).

Candidates now meet the minimum qualifications of a position if they meet the minimum education and experience listed on the vacancy announcement.

The Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs )/ Management Preferences are not required. Applicants who possess the following skills are preferred:

  • Standard Professional I or Standard Professional II NCDPI teaching license in Special Education, Highly Qualified in Adapted Curriculum.
  • The teacher must be physically able to provide six to seven hours of direct training and supervision to persons with developmental disabilities in individual and group situations, throughout a variety of learning environments.
  • The teacher must be skilled in assessment, program design, program implementation, and behavior support. The teacher must be able to demonstrate both these skills and teach them to other service providers.
  • The teacher must communicate effectively in writing and vocally in order to provide reliable information to the interdisciplinary team and to staff receiving supervision from the teacher.
  • The teacher must prepare written evaluations for the team and, in some cases, community placements. Written notes are required in residents’ charts.

Physical Requirements:


Medium work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. See ADA for more physical requirements expectations upon interview.

This Position Is Designated As Mandatory And Must Report Or Stay Over During Adverse Weather Events.
