Location: Central Library (89-11 Merrick Blvd, Jamaica, NY 11432)

Duties and Responsibilities

As part of the Community Service team and with a focus on positively engaging teens during out-of-school hours, Youth Counselors mentor and counsel teens, and facilitate programs with a focus on socio-emotional wellness, relationships, arts and culture, career exploration, and planning. Under the direction of the Teen Site Coordinator or Assistant Community Library Manager, Youth Counselors will work to create a youth-focused environment where teens can learn, explore, and socialize.

This position will develop and conduct workshops in multiple areas of youth development, including but not limited to, career planning, literacy, technology, socio-emotional wellness, and creative arts. This position coordinates programming with community-based organizations and maintains positive relationships with students. Leads one on one and small group mentoring sessions with students on topics such as school, family, friendships, future planning, and more. Acts as a positive role model for students. The Youth Counselor is responsible for assisting the Teen Center Coordinator in the management of the Teen Area. Instructs students on the expectations and guidelines of the teen space and maintains all safety standards of the Library. The Youth Counselor position assists with the monitoring and reporting of vendor-led programs. Assists the Teen Center Coordinator in the completion of monthly reports and data collection as well as the completion and submission of incident reports. Collects and organizes attendance information for daily programming within the teen space. Collects and organizes other relevant program data (programming evaluations, surveys, etc.) Interacts with all community members, especially youth. Performs other duties as required.

Position Information

❖The rate of pay for this position is $30.00 per hour.

❖Monday to Friday afternoons, year round, with a maximum of 17 hours per week.

❖This is a non-union position.

❖Part-time positions do not offer any medical or health benefits.

Education and Experience/Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Social Work, Sociology, Psychology, or related field required with a minimum of two years of experience in implementing interactive youth programs or a minimum of 60 college credits, in a related field, with a minimum of three years of experience in implementing interactive youth programs required. Experience in MS Office Suite software (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint). Strong verbal and written communication skills. Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills are required. Must have excellent attention to detail and familiarity with diverse customers’ needs.
