Eastside Legal Assistance Program (ELAP) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to working with people facing domestic violence, housing instability, immigration, and other issues that need a legal solution. We believe everyone should have access to legal help, and we do this by providing free civil legal aid in communities throughout King County. Individuals and families in our region who can’t afford a lawyer can get free legal advice through ELAP’s legal clinics, which are staffed by volunteer attorneys.

We are seeking a detail-oriented Accountant to manage and strengthen the organization’s financial systems. This role is responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, ensuring compliance with nonprofit accounting standards, supporting grant reporting, and safeguarding the organization’s financial health.

<Job Summary>
We are seeking a detail-oriented and energetic Accountant to join our team! In this vital role, you will manage a wide range of financial activities, including financial reporting, account reconciliation, and regulatory compliance. Your expertise will help uphold our organization’s financial integrity while supporting our mission-driven work. The ideal candidate will bring strong technical accounting skills, a proactive mindset, and a passion for social impact.

<Responsibilities>

Financial Management & Accounting

  • Maintain accurate financial records, including accounts payable/receivable, general ledger, and reconciliations.
  • Reconcile bank and credit card statements.
  • Prepare and review monthly financial statements, including Profit & Loss by Class, Balance Sheet, and Budget vs. Actual reports.
  • Process invoices, vendor payments, staff reimbursements, and employee expense reports.
  • File necessary tax returns and maintain nonprofit compliance.
  • Monitor organizational spending and support budgeting efforts.
  • Review vendor contracts for financial obligations and renewal terms.
  • Payroll & Benefits Administration
  • Process bi-weekly payroll: ensuring accurate timekeeping and payroll documentation
  • Ensure payroll is in compliance with federal and Washington State laws.
  • Administer 401(k) contributions and benefits deductions.

Grant & Fund Accounting

  • Track restricted and unrestricted funds in accordance with grant agreements.
  • Prepare and submit grant reimbursement invoices and required documentation for monthly submission.
  • Monitor grant budgets and ensure compliance with allowable cost requirements.
  • Support leadership with funder financial reporting.

Audit & Compliance

  • Prepare documentation for annual financial audit and serve as primary liaison with external auditors.
  • Maintain financial policies and procedures.
  • Ensure nonprofit compliance, including required state and federal filings.
  • Strengthen and maintain internal controls to mitigate financial risk.

Office Administration & Operations

  • Maintain office supplies and ensure an organized, professional workspace.
  • Coordinate IT support, office equipment, and software licenses.
  • Assist in planning staff meetings, office events, and trainings.
  • Support special projects to enhance office efficiency and operations.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
  • 3-5+ years of accounting experience (nonprofit experience strongly preferred).
  • Strong understanding of accounting principles, nonprofit finance, and grant tracking.
  • Proficiency in QuickBooks, Intuit, and Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook).
  • Must be available for payroll processing, end-of-month billing, and funder reporting.
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills with keen attention to detail.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to multitask, prioritize, and work independently.
  • Must be able to commute to ELAP’s Bellevue office at least twice a week.
  • Valid WA driver’s license and reliable transportation.

Preferred:

  • Experience with nonprofit accounting, grant management, and reporting.
  • Experience preparing for or supporting annual audits
  • Experience implementing financial controls in small-to mid-sized organizations.
  • Background in legal aid, social justice, or nonprofit administration.

HOURS, SALARY, AND BENEFITS

HOURS: 40 hours

SALARY: $75,000 - $85,000 per year, DOE

BENEFITS: Medical/Dental/Vision and Life Insurance, 401(k) with match, 12 paid Holidays, the week between Christmas Day and New Year’s off, paid Vacation, and paid Sick Leave

LOCATION: Hybrid-remote; 2 days a week at ELAP’s office in Bellevue
