Position Summary:
This person will have responsibility for handling legal and regulatory matters impacting Oaktree’s business and operational activities across different regions, with primary focus on India. The role will be based full time in Hyderabad.
Responsibilities include:
  • Advising Oaktree’s corporate teams with respect to operational activities primarily related to Oaktree offices in Hyderabad, Mumbai and GIFT City;
  • Drafting and negotiating commercial contracts, managing intellectual property matters (including contentious matters) related to India, handling litigation/disputes, and advising on various other general corporate and commercial matters;
  • Managing corporate governance matters, including company secretarial matters for entities in India and other jurisdictions in APAC and EMEA;
  • Drafting, developing and maintaining various playbooks, handbooks, guidelines, trackers and other internal processes.
  • Assisting HR on India employment law and employee relations matters and on lifecycle activities including preparation and negotiation of employment agreements, and separations;
  • Providing litigation support and driving outcome;
  • Providing guidance, conducting research and monitoring new requirements on Indian matters, including regulatory issues, licensing matters, regulatory inspections, inquiries and investigations, trading activities, anti-bribery, data privacy (e.g., Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023), cybersecurity and anti-money laundering;
  • Working closely with members of the Legal, HR, Compliance, Accounting and other departments in Los Angeles, London and Hong Kong to coordinate the various responsibilities; managing and mitigating legal risks;
  • Coordinating, managing and working with various external advisers;
  • Performing other tasks and projects as necessary.
Experience Required
  • Willingness to relocate to Hyderabad, if necessary.
  • At least 8-10 years of experience with a law firm and / or within the financial services industry or asset management industry.
  • Ability to review, draft and negotiate contracts, including commercial agreements, as well as corporate documents is required.
  • Ability to manage corporate governance including company secretarial matters for entities in India and other jurisdictions.
  • A strong understanding of Indian laws including labour laws, privacy laws, and legal and regulatory frameworks and processes, is preferred.
  • Experience in dealing with senior business stakeholders and managing ambiguity, especially in a highly matrixed organization is preferred.
  • Exceptional English writing, drafting and communication skills are mandatory.

Education
  • Law degree and/or qualifications.
  • Candidates who are qualified company secretaries will have an added advantage.
