Responsible for the development of supplier sources for the purchasing of production components and/or packaging. Seeks and evaluates bids from suppliers to supply parts/packaging to meet corporate standards for on-time delivery and quality. Negotiates price and terms of delivery with suppliers. Investigates vendor product quality and delivery problems. Works with engineering, quality assurance, sales and accounting to resolve product quality and delivery problems.
Essential Functions:- Develop and maintain supplier sources for the purchasing of components and/or packaging.
- Solicits, obtains and selects qualified vendors based on cost and quality to buy production components and/or packaging to meet Materials Requirement Planning needs.
- Coordinates with manufacturing and packaging engineers in the design development and test approval of new components and/or packaging to meet internal and external customer needs.
- Reviews existing components and/or packaging for cost improvements and coordinates change with manufacturing, engineering, and suppliers.
- Investigates quality and delivery problems. Determines the cause and nature or problems with the assistance of engineering, quality assurance, sales and accounting. Follows-up appropriately with vendors.
- Negotiates price and terms of delivery with suppliers and obtain cost savings objectives.
- Investigates and submits engineering changes to support production efficiency.
- Coordinates order and delivery requirements with planner.
- Promote localization of purchased parts through domestic suppliers.
- Assists in the training of new buyers and coordinates the expediting activity of the planners.
- Promotes an associate relations environment that is consistent with long term management objectives.

Essential Functions Physical Requirements / Working Conditions:
- Office environment with noise from computer peripherals such as mainframe, disk drives and printers.
- Factory environment with noise from manufacturing equipment. Exposure to dangerous equipment.
- Possible serious injury due to carelessness around equipment.
- Job requires standing, walking, climbing stairs and sitting.
- Sometimes lifts, carries or moves objects up to 25 pounds, occasionally over 60 pounds.
- Ability to hear warnings from equipment, machines, vehicles and public-address systems.
- Requires frequent reaching at or below shoulder height, some over shoulder work.
- Requires frequent movement of head and neck.
- Clothing and shoes must comply with current MIOSHA regulations and current dress code policy.
- Use of a video display terminal (VDT) for periods in excess of 30 minutes at a time. Possible eye strain from extended periods of viewing VDT.
- May spend time in travel between vendors and customers using an automobile in high traffic areas. Exposure to automobile accidents causing bodily damage
Specialized Training, Skills, Abilities, Experience:- 4-year degree in business preferred or equivalent experience
- Knowledge of BaaN and Plex is preferred.
- 3-5 years of buying experience, preferably buying production commodities in a manufacturing environment (multi-product/multi-assembly lines experience).
- Knowledge of custom packaging, helpful.
