Job Summary
The CNC Lathe Operator is responsible for setting up, operating, and maintaining CNC lathe machines to produce precision components according to engineering drawings and quality standards. The role requires attention to detail, machining knowledge, and commitment to workplace safety.
Key ResponsibilitiesMachine Setup & Operation
- Set up CNC lathe machines by installing tools, jaws, fixtures, and work-holding devices.
- Load and secure raw materials and parts on the machine.
- Operate CNC lathes to produce components according to drawings, specifications, and tolerances.
Programming & Adjustments
- Read and interpret CNC programs (FANUC/Siemens/Heidenhain, etc.).
- Make necessary offsets, tool changes, and parameter adjustments.
- Assist in simple program edits at the machine control panel.
Quality Control
- Use measuring instruments such as Vernier calipers, micrometers, gauges, and CMM reports.
- Inspect finished parts to ensure they meet dimensional and surface finish requirements.
- Identify defects and perform corrective actions.
Maintenance
- Perform routine machine cleaning and basic preventive maintenance.
- Report mechanical issues to maintenance team.
Documentation & Reporting
- Maintain production logs, inspection reports, and tool usage records.
- Follow job order instructions and update supervisors on production status.
Required Skills & Qualifications
- Experience operating CNC lathes (1–5 years preferred).
- Ability to read engineering drawings and technical documents.
- Knowledge of cutting tools, feeds, speeds, and machining principles.
- Familiarity with CNC controls (FANUC, Siemens, Mazatrol, etc.).
- Strong understanding of GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing).
- Basic math skills and precision measurement ability.
- Good problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
Education
- High school / technical diploma or ITI (Machinist, Turner, or Fitter).
- CNC machining certification is an added advantage.
Safety Requirements
- Follow all machine operation and shop floor safety procedures.
- Use PPE: safety glasses, safety shoes, hearing protection, etc.
Optional / Additional Requirements
- Experience in CNC turning centers (2-axis, 3-axis, multi-spindle).
- Knowledge of live tooling, bar feeders, and part catchers.
- Experience in mass production or precision toolroom environment.
