LATHE MACHINIST

Lathe Machinist –

The Lathe Machinist is responsible for setting up, operating, and maintaining manual and/or CNC lathes to produce precision parts according to engineering drawings, blueprints, and specifications. This role requires strong attention to detail, mechanical aptitude, and the ability to work independently to meet production and quality goals.

Key ResponsibilitiesMachine Setup & Operation

• Set up and operate manual and/or CNC lathe machines to perform turning, facing, threading, drilling, boring, grooving, and other machining operations.
• Read and interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, GD&T, and work instructions.
• Select appropriate cutting tools, fixtures, speeds, and feeds for each job.

Quality & Inspection

• Inspect parts using micrometers, calipers, gauges, CMM, and other precision measuring tools.
• Verify dimensions and tolerances according to technical drawings.
• Perform in-process quality checks and adjust offsets or toolpaths as needed.

Programming & Adjustments

(If CNC)

• Load, prove out, and edit G-code programs when necessary.
• Optimize machining processes for efficiency, safety, and tool life.

Maintenance & Safety

• Maintain machines, tooling, and work area in clean, organized condition.
• Perform basic preventive maintenance and report issues promptly.
• Follow all safety protocols and ensure proper use of PPE.

Required Skills & Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent; technical/vocational training preferred.
• 2+ years of experience as a lathe machinist (manual and/or CNC).
• Strong knowledge of machining principles, materials, and metal cutting processes.
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints, GD&T, and machining symbols.
• Proficiency with precision measuring instruments (micrometers, calipers, gauges).
• Ability to troubleshoot machining issues and make independent adjustments.
• Strong attention to detail, accuracy, and quality focus.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with CNC controls (Fanuc, Haas, Mazak, Okuma, etc.).
• Experience machining steel, aluminum, stainless, brass, and exotic alloys.
• Familiarity with manufacturing documentation such as travelers or routers.
