Commercial Manager

Job Purpose:

The Commercial Manager is responsible for the overall commercial and contractual management of infrastructure projects. This role ensures that all commercial aspects of the project are properly managed, risks are identified and mitigated, and the financial interests of the company are protected throughout the project lifecycle.


Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Lead and manage the commercial function for infrastructure projects (e.g. roads, bridges, utilities, water, sewerage, public works).
  • Oversee the preparation, negotiation, and administration of contracts and subcontracts.
  • Manage and mentor a team of Quantity Surveyors and other commercial staff.
  • Monitor project budgets, forecasts, and cash flow, ensuring profitability and cost control.
  • Identify, evaluate, and manage commercial risks and opportunities.
  • Handle claims, variations, and dispute resolution with clients, subcontractors, and suppliers.
  • Prepare and present regular commercial reports to senior management.
  • Ensure compliance with company policies, legal requirements, and industry standards.
  • Liaise with project managers, engineers, clients, and external stakeholders to support project delivery.


Experience:

  • Infrastructure and contracting background is a must!
  • 10-15 years of experience in commercial management within the infrastructure or civil engineering sector.
  • Proven track record managing large-scale infrastructure projects (e.g. highways, utilities, water, or public infrastructure).
  • Excellent reputation in handling claims, contract negotiation, and cost control.



Technical Skills and Competencies:

  • In-depth knowledge of contract forms (e.g. FIDIC, NEC, bespoke contracts).
  • Strong understanding of commercial and financial principles in construction.
  • Excellent negotiation, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency in cost management, budgeting, and forecasting.
  • Ability to manage and motivate teams.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Familiarity with relevant software (e.g. MS Excel, project management tools, cost management systems).


Educational Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Quantity Surveying, Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field.
  • Professional qualifications such as MRICS, RICS, or equivalent are highly desirable.
