Job Purpose:
The Communications Specialist supports the district’s strategic communications plan by managing daily digital platforms and ensuring messaging is clear, accessible, and accurate.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in English, journalism, or communications preferred
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
- Excellent organizational skills to manage workflow, maintain deadlines, and adapt to emergent situations
- Advanced word processing skills (G-Suite for Education), familiarity with website and social media content management systems, knowledge of electronic newsletters, and proficiency in software related to communications positions
- Ability to work independently or to collaborate as part of a team
- Highly creative with excellent problem-solving and project management skills
- Flexibility to attend evening Board of Education meetings and other school events as needed
- Must have personal transportation to travel between district schools daily
- Ability to respond to urgent/emergency communication needs after hours (for example, school closing announcements, etc.)
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assist in implementing defined communication plans
- Manage the D64 websites, social media, and other communication platforms to ensure content is up to date and accurate, including ownership of the D64 staff portal
- Conduct assigned research, monitor day-to-day social media feed, and track basic community feedback (like website inquiries) to assist the Director of Communications in understanding stakeholder needs
- Work collaboratively to develop and manage an annual editorial calendar
- Update or develop various communication materials, including flyers, docs, graphics, and other publications
- Provide crisis communications support as needed
- Assist with the publication of all D64 communication tools, including newsletters, annual reports, and other printed/digital materials
- Attend Board of Education meetings when the Director of Communications cannot attend
- Provide support to district staff as needed, related to the use of communication platforms in the district
- Ensure brand consistency, ADA accessibility, and clarity across all digital platforms
- Track and compile basic digital metrics (website traffic, social media & newsletter analytics) and assist the Director of Communications in reporting these insights to improve platform effectiveness
- All duties as assigned by the Director of Communications
Physical Demands:
- Employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds while performing the essential functions and duties of this position
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, walk, hear, and/or use hands to finger, handle, or touch controls of computer equipment
- Navigate the school building to support the needs of students and prioritize student safety
Work Environment:
- The work environment is that of a business office, school classrooms, and other school facilities
- The noise level of the work environment is moderate to noisy
