Job Overview:
As the Cost and Inventory Accountant, you bring strong attention to detail and a practical, analytical approach to managing costing and inventory processes. You’ll play a key role in ensuring accuracy in financial reporting, inventory valuation, and cost tracking. You’re confident working with ERP systems and collaborating with colleagues across teams, including operations, procurement, and commercial. You take ownership of your work, enjoy solving problems, and are always looking for ways to improve how things are done. Your contributions will support the finance team’s overall performance and help the business make more informed decisions.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Cost Accounting & Analysis
- Track and report production and input costs across farms (e.g., labour, water, packaging, fertilizers, energy).
- Monitor and analyse actual vs standard costs per crop or SKU.
- Maintain and update cost allocation models by crop, farm, and SKU.
- Provide cost variance analysis against budgets and historical trends.
- Partner with the Commercial team to deliver SKU-level margin and pricing analysis.
- Provide margin insights by crop, region, and customer segment to support commercial decision-making.
2. Inventory Management & Valuation
- Maintain accurate inventory records for raw materials, growing crops, and finished goods.
- Ensure timely and correct posting of inventory movements in ERP (e.g., harvests, transfers, adjustments).
- Perform month-end inventory valuation and reconciliations.
- Support cycle counts, physical inventory checks, and resolve stock discrepancies with operations and supply chain teams.
3. Item Master & Product Setup
- Act as finance partner in item master creation and updates in the ERP system.
- Work with Operations, Procurement, and Commercial teams to ensure items are set up with correct categories, units of measure, costing methods, and tax codes.
- Maintain consistency in item coding and attributes across business units and regions.
- Monitor and address data quality issues across the inventory and product master files.
4. Fixed Assets Accounting
- Maintain the fixed asset register, ensuring accurate capitalization, depreciation, transfers, and disposals.
- Perform regular asset reconciliations and support periodic physical verification exercises.
- Ensure compliance with accounting standards and company capitalization policies.
5. Financial Reporting
- Prepare cost and inventory schedules for month-end close, including reconciliations and accruals.
- Support the Finance Manager in preparing inventory and cost-related components of management reports.
- Contribute to weekly internal reporting on cost movements, input prices, yield trends, and inventory balances.
- Assist with the preparation of year-end audit schedules and provide supporting documentation for auditors.
6. Budgeting & Forecasting
- Provide cost inputs for annual budgets and periodic reforecasts.
- Maintain budget vs actual trackers at the farm, cost centre, and crop level.
- Highlight major cost drivers, risks, and opportunities as part of forecast updates.
7. Audit Support & Compliance
- Prepare and reconcile audit schedules related to COGS, inventory, and production costs.
- Support internal and external audits with timely responses and supporting documentation.
- Ensure compliance with internal controls around inventory, costing, and data governance.
8. Operational & Commercial Business Partnering
- Support Farm Operations teams in tracking key cost drivers and improving cost visibility.
- Partner with the Commercial team on SKU costing, pricing analysis, and product margin insights.
- Ensure alignment of operational activities (e.g., new crop trials, changes in input mix) with financial impact.
- Assist in cost inputs for new product development, supplier changes, or customer deals.
9. Systems & Process Improvement
- Support improvements in NetSuite usage for inventory and costing accuracy.
- Identify gaps in costing, inventory control, or item data and propose enhancements.
- Work with internal stakeholders to automate manual reports or reconciliation processes where possible.
10. Ad Hoc Support & Other Duties
- Support the business on ad hoc analysis, data requests, and cross-functional projects as needed.
Qualifications & Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; CA, CMA, or CPA preferred.
- 3–5+ years’ experience in cost and inventory accounting, preferably in agriculture, FMCG, or manufacturing.
- Strong ERP experience (e.g., NetSuite, Oracle, SAP, or equivalent).
- Solid understanding of inventory valuation, cost allocations, and product costing.
- Comfortable partnering with non-finance teams and working close to operations
