PURPOSE OF THE ROLE
As a Digital Journalist at BBC News Urdu, you will play a key role in shaping the digital and social media output of the service. Based in Islamabad, you will collaborate with editorial teams locally and across Pakistan to produce impactful content that meets the BBC’s editorial standards. Your work will help maximize audience reach and engagement across digital platforms, ensuring BBC News Urdu remains a trusted source of news for Urdu-speaking audiences worldwide.
Your Key Responsibilities And Impact

Research, report, write, translate, edit, and adapt stories for digital/social media publication in Urdu.

Use data analytics to inform editorial decisions and contribute to impactful video and text-based storytelling.

Ensure all content complies with BBC editorial guidelines, legal standards, and copyright requirements.

Reversion and adapt video content for various digital platforms, ensuring format suitability and audience relevance.

Originate and manage video projects from concept to final production, tailored to BBC News Urdu’s social media audience.

Collaborate with editors and senior journalists to deliver timely and engaging digital news coverage.

Identify and develop story ideas through social media and other digital tools to enhance audience engagement.
Essential Criteria
YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

Full command of written and spoken Urdu (first or equivalent language) and strong comprehension of English.

In-depth knowledge of data analytics and experience using it to shape content for diverse audience groups.

Strong understanding of current affairs in Pakistan and South Asia, with the ability to produce original and impactful digital journalism.

Ability to write clearly, quickly, and engagingly in Urdu, and to rework scripts for multi-platform use.

Demonstrated experience in digital production, including social media and audience interactivity.

Clear understanding of the target audience’s needs and the ability to create compelling content in video, and social formats.

High level of digital literacy, including video editing and graphic design, audience engagement, and content optimization.

Familiarity with BBC editorial policies and journalistic legal standards, including copyright.

Ability to identify stories through social media and lead the creation of engaging content for digital platforms.

Knowledge of SEO best practices and audience behavior analytics.
