Full-Time, Exempt

Position Overview:
George Washington’s Mount Vernon is seeking a great storyteller. The Director of Media provides strategic leadership and creative direction for all media initiatives, overseeing an innovative team responsible for content creation, social media, and video production. This role drives the development and execution of an integrated media strategy that strengthens brand identity, expands audience engagement, and supports organizational goals across platforms. This position will lead strategy, workflow, and production of high-quality media content from idea to script to screens. The Director of Media will be tasked with advancing the landmark goals of Mount Vernon’s strategic plan, including educating and inspiring the world about George Washington’s character and leadership.

Reporting to the Vice President for Media and Communications, the Director of Media leads the planning, production, and distribution of compelling digital and print content, ensuring consistency in voice, visual identity, and messaging aligned with Mount Vernon’s strategic vision. The Director of Media fosters a collaborative, innovative environment for creative professionals while establishing clear performance metrics, workflows, and standards of excellence.

This position requires a visionary leader who combines strategic thinking with hands-on creative insight- someone who understands emerging media trends, audience behavior, and digital best practices, and can translate them into impactful storytelling that advances the organization’s mission and reputation.

The ideal candidate enjoys American history, loves writing, has extensive experience creating digital content, and can lead an innovative team that will identify and produce engaging stories about George Washington and Mount Vernon for the public. Would be a great fit for a journalist.

Essential Duties:
  • Strong writing skills, an ability to quickly create new content from interviewing staff, highlighting estate activities, or digesting research in a web-ready format
  • Ability to lead the media team responsible for content creation, social media, and video production
  • Work collaboratively with the George Washington Presidential Library at Mount Vernon and the Center for Digital History housed within
  • Experience with producing both short and long-form stories for a wide audience
  • Work with their team to develop multiple complementary content pieces each week to fuel mountvernon.org, social platforms, the Mount Vernon Magazine, and YouTube
  • Lead the strategy and oversee content for social media channels
  • Translate long-form content into high-performing, channel-specific digital assets, including social posts, videos, and email content
  • Identify opportunities to expand Mount Vernon’s digital footprint through new platforms, partnerships, and innovative storytelling approaches.
  • Ability to help plan and focus on a unified content strategy as defined by the Vice President of Media and Communications
  • Ensure Mount Vernon’s editorial style guide is followed
  • Have a strategic approach to content production with an ability to look at metrics and analytics as a guiding path for production and final product, and measurably grow audiences on Mount Vernon’s platforms
  • Oversees the acquisition of production technology and equipment
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with both internal and external stakeholders. Foster a positive climate to build an effective, creative, collaborative team committed to Mount Vernon’s mission
Qualifications:
  • Must be a creative, innovative thinker
  • Demonstrated storytelling skills. Excellent verbal and writing ability.
  • Strong knowledge of “what works” with content
  • Excellent understanding of how to maximize Mount Vernon’s presence on popular video channels like YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, etc.
  • Knowledgeable about social media best practices
  • Ability to stay abreast of emerging technologies in media production
  • Experience with video shooting and editing production using Adobe Premiere Pro is a plus
  • Ability to manage a complex schedule and ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously. Must have strong organizational skills
  • Good editorial skills and attention to detail
  • Deadline focused
  • Ability to work effectively with little direct supervision
  • Interest in American history and the founding era
  • Strong understanding of how to measure the effectiveness of video content
  • Ability to be on-camera is a plus
  • Demonstrated ability to lead creative teams
  • Minimum ten years of progressively responsible experience with at least five years of supervisory experience
  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred
Work Environment:
This position operates primarily in a professional office setting. The role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, and filing cabinets. The work environment is generally quiet, with occasional interruptions.
Physical Requirements:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit for extended periods, talk, hear, and use hands to type or handle objects. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 15 pounds. Visual acuity to read and interpret documents and computer screens is required.
