Job Description
POSITION: ESL (English Second Language)
TeacherIMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR: Director of Federal Programs
FLSA STATUS: Exempt
EMPLOYMENT: 200 days annually, pursuant to WV Code §18-5-45
TERM: may be established by MCBOE
SALARY: Mason County teacher salary scale commensurate with experience and degree
level
EVALUATION: Performance in this position will be evaluated by the assigned administrators and in accordance with WV State Code §18A-2-12, WV State Board Policy 5310, and MCBOE Policy C.2.3, Performance Evaluation of School Personnel – Administrative Procedures
JOB SUMMARY: Provide appropriate support/interventions for ESL students and ensure that the students meet the learning objectives and standards for the appropriate grade level/content area.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Implement best practices of English Second Language with students, teachers, and families.
- Implement consultative model for ESL services based on need of individual ESL student to include the following: reviewing and re-teaching prerequisite skills; organizing previously introduced material; adapting curriculum for easier access; assisting with long-term assignments; targeting learning strategies including acceleration, to ensure content knowledge acquisition; modifying assessments and instruction based on ESL student level.
- Manage classroom activities and provide instruction in a variety of ways (individual, pairs, whole and small group, computer-aided, tutorial, etc.) based on ESL student level.
- Structure multi-level activities developing English skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) in academic areas.
- Ability to communicate effectively with students, families, and school personnel in regards to English language acquisition.
- Works collaboratively with classroom teachers to ensure success of ESL students based on need and data.
- Work with students and families to ensure translation of language.
- Conduct and administer all aspects of state ESL screening and testing requirements.
- Work cooperatively with the Director of Federal Programs to ensure federal and state mandates are met and assist with all aspects of Title III monitoring.
- Monitor all ESL student progress including the following: progress toward achieving instructional content standards; student learning by 9 weeks and semester.
- Provide job-embedded professional development to teachers related to ESL standards and students.
- Attend meetings related to ESL.
- Maintain and upgrade professional skills related to ESL.
- Perform other job related functions assigned by the Director of Federal Programs.
ROLES NOT PERMITTED WHILE BEING COMPENSATED AS AN ESL Teacher:- Substituting
- Covering classes and/or planning times
- Covering other teachers’ duties.
- Office duties
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Certified by the State of West Virginia to teach ESL (English Second Language).
- Criminal history check of new applicants for licensure as per WV Code §18A-3-10.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Most commonly, the educational setting is indoors with outdoor settings for recess and field trip activities. The noise level in the work environment is low to moderate (20-60 dB).
