EVIDENCE TECHNICIAN (PERCENTAGE-TIME - 40%) / POLICE DEPARTMENT

The Police Department is seeking a 40% Evidence Technician, working 16 hours per week.

JOB OVERVIEW: The purpose of this position is to maintain the evidence submitted to the Evidence Division from various law enforcement agencies, prepare reports, and provide clerical support for the Evidence Division. The work is performed under the supervision of the Evidence Manager.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provides clerical support for the Evidence Division.
  • Receives evidence from and returns evidence to law enforcement agencies from the County and area municipalities.
  • Tracks, inventories, and monitors evidence.
  • Performs biannual evidence reconciliation.
  • Copies correspondence and legal documents.
  • Maintains electronic and hardcopy laboratory records, including evidence sheets.
  • May require court testimony regarding evidence submitted to the Evidence Division.
  • Answers and directs incoming inquiries. Prepares miscellaneous reports and handles mail as needed.
  • Contact agencies to obtain case-related information.
  • Opens and distributes mail.
  • Prepares miscellaneous reports as required by the Evidence Manager
  • Retrieves and stores files, which may include hard copies and/or electronic copies.
  • Utilizes personal computer, County network, word processing, spreadsheet, and specialized software packages.
  • Assists with compiling records for discovery requests.
  • Attends relevant training in evidence management and preservation to maintain knowledge of evidence handling and tracking processes.
  • Assists supervisor and other staff with special projects.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Education
    • Requires graduation from a general or technical high school or equivalent.
  • Experience
    • Two years of clerical experience, preferably in a law enforcement environment or involving significant data entry or transcription.
    • Scientific coursework or familiarity with chemistry or biology is preferred and helpful.
    • Any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities will be considered.
  • Knowledge, skills, and abilities
    • Familiarity with chemical terminology, chemical analysis instruments, and/or biological concepts helpful.
    • Experience with database and information management systems is helpful.
    • Requires attention to detail and good organizational skills.
    • Requires strong written and verbal communication skills.
    • Must be free of pending charges and felony convictions.
    • Requires flexibility in the work schedule.
  • Employment is contingent on successfully passing a full criminal background check.
