About the Agency
Aga Khan Rural Support Programme (AKRSP) – Pakistan :
AKRSP was established by His Highness the Aga Khan and the Aga Khan Foundation in 1982 to improve the quality of life of local village communities, primarily in Gilgit-Baltistan and Chitral. AKRSP’s approaches are community-led and encourage equitable social and economic development in the region. AKRSP’s interventions contribute effectively to sustainable development with a special focus on poor and vulnerable people. AKRSP’s achievements include manifold increases in incomes, construction, and rehabilitation of over 4,000 small infrastructure projects, the planting of tens of millions of trees, the development of hundreds of acres of marginal lands, the mobilisation of nearly $5 million village savings, and the establishment of more than 5,000 community organisations. AKRSP’s success has led to the replication of the programme in Pakistan and in the region, and its approaches have shaped further collaborations led by the Aga Khan Foundation in other countries such as Tajikistan, Afghanistan, Kenya, and Mozambique.
