Director of Human Resources

Are you an experienced HR leader with Long-term Care experience with a passion to make meaningful impact in a dynamic organization with over 300 employees? We are seeking a Director of Human Resources to lead our HR Department with a focus on employee experience, regulatory compliance, and strategic alignment with organizational goals.

Position Summary

The Director of Human Resources is responsible for leading all aspects of human capital management including recruitment, retention, employee relations, compliance, benefits administration, workforce planning, and organizational culture development.

The ideal candidate understands the complexity of long-term care, CMS regulations, staffing challenges, and the importance of building a mission-driven workplace culture.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership

  • Serve as HR advisor to the Administrator and leadership team
  • Develop workforce strategy aligned with census and budget goals
  • Lead employee retention and engagement initiatives
  • Support succession planning and leadership development

Recruitment & Staffing

  • Oversee full-cycle recruitment for clinical and non-clinical roles
  • Develop pipeline strategies for CNAs, nurses, and leadership roles
  • Monitor agency utilization and reduce contract labor dependency
  • Ensure onboarding process supports retention

Compliance & Regulatory

  • Ensure compliance with:
    • CMS regulations
    • Virginia Department of Health requirements
    • EEO, FMLA, ADA, FLSA, OSHA
  • Oversee background checks and barrier crime compliance
  • Manage personnel file auditing and documentation readiness

Employee Relations

  • Investigate grievances and workplace complaints
  • Coach managers on progressive discipline
  • Maintain fair and consistent HR practices
  • Promote a culture of transparency and accountability

Compensation & Benefits

  • Administer benefit programs
  • Support compensation benchmarking
  • Partner with Finance on labor budget management
  • Oversee payroll accuracy in collaboration with Accounting

Risk Management

  • Manage workers’ compensation claims
  • Monitor unemployment claims
  • Support risk mitigation strategies related to staffing

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Human Resources, Business, or related field (required)
  • 5+ years HR leadership experience (healthcare preferred)
  • Experience in skilled nursing or senior living strongly preferred
  • Knowledge of CMS and Virginia healthcare regulations preferred
  • PHR/SPHR or SHRM-CP/SHRM-SCP certification preferred
