Legal Consultant

RESPONSIBILITIES: The position requires that the Consultant be able to fulfill the following responsibilities:

▪ Work with the Casework Director to implement legal interventions for Kshamata, JVI and its partners by providing support in the following areas:

o Case generation

o Rescue interventions

o Follow up of cases in Court

o Legal Consultation

o Conducting legal trainings

o Regular weekly visits to the Nyay Kendras (legal aid cells set up in slum communities and red light areas) for the purpose of consultations and trainings.

o Rehabilitation of the survivor

o Systemic change; and

o Relationship building with Government bodies and Partner Organizations.

▪ Ensure perpetrator accountability in POCSO, Anti-Human Trafficking or other Human Rights violations cases in Mumbai/Maharashtra courts by working closely with Public Prosecutors and other stakeholders in the justice system.

▪ Develop and maintain a strong practical and theoretical legal knowledge in JVI’s casework focus areas through ongoing training, research and experience.

▪ Facilitate the ongoing implementation of casework projects in Mumbai/Maharashtra including managing intake of new cases, reviewing cases, analyzing the progress of cases, regular updating/progress of the said cases on the Kshamata and JVI reporting platform.

▪ Preparing weekly and monthly reports.

▪ Giving verbal and written advice/ consultations to Kshamata, JVI and its partners in Mumbai/Maharashtra and their advocates on legal issues.

▪ Liaising with Kshamata and JVI, Maharashtra team, partners and Government stakeholders to ensure legal casework and overall programmatic goals are met.

▪ Develop, conduct and participate in training for Government, NGO stakeholders and community members in slums/ chawls. These shall include both virtual and actual.

▪ Travelling significantly in Mumbai/Maharashtra and other states to meet with project partners, advocates and other casework stakeholders in relation to legal work.

▪ Where required, travelling to other states to meet with project partners, advocates and other field staff in relation to cases.

▪ Represent Kshamata and JVI at select meetings and events.

▪ Carry out additional assignments as mutually agreed upon by the Consultant, Kshamata and JVI.

ELIGIBILITY: The position requires that the Consultant possess the following –

▪ A Bachelor’s or a Master’s degree in Law

▪ Fresher

▪ Legal knowledge of the POCSO Act, ITPA, JJ Act, DV Act, Bonded Labour Act and other criminal laws and procedures. Any work experience on the above would be an advantage.

▪ Fluency in English and Marathi (Speaking, Reading, and Writing).

LOCATION: The Consultant will be based in Mumbai, Maharashtra. Travel throughout Mumbai/Maharashtra will be required in order to carry out the Consultancy.
