The University of Akron’s Bierce Library is hiring one full time Library Specialist in the Public Services Department. The position open supports the Resource Sharing Manager, Student Manager, Makerstudio Manager, and assists with all department responsibilities. They will work in a team setting to supervise our busy Library Service Desk, support our Makerstudio, manage our collection stacks, provide exceptional customer service to students and faculty, ensure the library remains open and safe during operational hours, and provide supervision and leadership to our excellent group of student employees.
Job Summary:
Provide general support in the Public Service Department of the library by assisting and instructing library patrons in the use of library systems and resources. Provide specialized support for specific library services such as resource sharing and circulating technology. Recommend, interpret and
apply library policies, standards and procedures. Resolve questions and issues through independent thought and action.
Essential Functions:
20-30% Perform daily general/routine Public Services Department duties that include assisting library patrons, processing and digitizing resource sharing requests, security and building management, financial hold resolution and following opening and closing procedures. Initiate, design and collaborate on various library related projects. Assume Public Services Department specific responsibilities in the absence of other department staff.
20-30% Support Bierce course reserves service through request processing, digitizing resources, tracking copyright, and supporting library systems that integrate course reserves and resource sharing with campus technologies. Maintain verbal and written communications with instructors as to status of reserve requests and with copyright holders when clearance
request is required.
20-30% Perform Stack Management duties by creating new status reports (i.e. missing books) and conduct routing searches for items appearing on reports. Assist with regular cleaning of stacks and both large and small stack maintenance projects.
10- 20% Supervise student assistants and the daily operation of Public Services and technology circulation. Respond to and resolve daily problems and maintain strong verbal/written communications locally and statewide when necessary. Run daily, monthly and yearly reports.

Required Experience:
Requires a minimum of 2 years experience in library policies and procedures. Ability to use library systems such as online catalogs, research databases.
Problem solving skills and ability to work independently and resolve issues through independent thought and action.
Strong verbal and written communication skills and customer service skills.
Computer software skills required to input and retrieve data along with the ability to create reports and perform internet searches.
Preferred Experience
Experience with Library Service Platform such as Alma
Experience with resource sharing at state, national, and international levels
Leadership: Responsible for directing and monitoring the work of student and/or temporary workers.

Compensation: The compensation for this position is commensurate with experience and qualifications. This is a union position with a salary grade of SBU-110. Salary determination is subject to the SBU collective bargaining agreement. The compensation for this position is $18.21 USD hourly.
