A Maintenance Head (or Maintenance Manager) is a senior leader responsible for the oversight of all installation, repair, and upkeep operations of an organization's facilities and physical assets. Their primary objective is to ensure that all machinery and infrastructure operate at maximum efficiency while adhering to strict safety and budgetary guidelines.

Core Responsibilities

  • Strategic Planning & Maintenance Programs: Develop and implement comprehensive maintenance strategies, including Preventive Maintenance (PM) and Predictive Maintenance schedules to minimize unplanned downtime.
  • Team Leadership & Management: Hire, train, and supervise a multi-skilled team of technicians, engineers, and administrative staff. This includes conducting performance evaluations and fostering a proactive work culture.
  • Budgeting & Financial Control: Create and manage the department’s annual budget, track maintenance expenses, and prepare Capital Expenditure (CAPEX) proposals for new equipment or major upgrades.
  • Safety & Regulatory Compliance: Ensure all maintenance activities comply with health, safety, and environmental (HSE) regulations, such as OSHA standards.
  • Inventory & Vendor Management: Oversee the inventory of spare parts and specialized tools. Negotiate contracts and manage relationships with external contractors and service providers.
  • Facility Inspections & Troubleshooting: Conduct regular site inspections to identify potential problems. Provide technical expertise to diagnose and resolve complex mechanical or electrical failures.
  • Technology Integration: Champion the use of Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) to track work orders, asset history, and performance analytics.

Key Skills & Qualifications

  • Technical Proficiency: Deep understanding of electrical, hydraulic, and mechanical systems.
  • Leadership: Ability to motivate a team and delegate tasks effectively based on individual competencies.
  • Problem-Solving: Strong analytical skills to perform root cause analysis (RCA) on equipment failures.
  • Education: Most roles require a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Facility Management.
  • Experience: Typically requires 5 to 10+ years of experience in maintenance, with several years in a supervisory or managerial capacity.
