The parish bookkeeper maintains accurate financial records, manages accounts payable/receivable, processes payroll, and performs bank reconciliations in compliance with diocesan policies. The bookkeeper prepares monthly financial statements for the pastor and finance council, handle weekly collections, and assist with budgeting. Often requiring an associate's degree in accounting or equivalent experience, this role demands proficiency in accounting software and strict confidentiality.
Key Responsibilities & Duties
- Financial Recordkeeping:Maintain the general ledger, manage accounts payable/receivable, and ensure compliance with diocesan financial guidelines.
- Cash & Contributions:Record weekly offertory collections, donations, and special funds.Recording of online donations. Regularly communicate with parish administrator about financial gifts requiring personal acknowledgement (e.g. thank you notes, memorial gifts)
- Payroll & HR: Process staff payroll, manage benefits (insurance/retirement), and maintain employee records. Pay monthly payroll taxes to IRS and Virginia tax dept.
- Reconciliation & Reporting:Reconcile bank accounts monthly, manage cash flow, and prepare monthly financial reports for the rector and vestry. Create a monthly check register showing revenue & expenses.
- Budgeting:Assist with the preparation of the annual parish budget.
Working Conditions:
- 10 hrs/wk
- Mostly remote, but will be required to pick up teller sheets, donations, and invoices as well as return printed checks and paid invoices to church.
Qualifications & Skills
- Education/Experience:Associate’s degree in Accounting/Business or 2+ years of relevant bookkeeping experience.
- Software Proficiency: Strong knowledge of Power Church or ACS and office software such as or similar to Excel, Word.
- Key Competencies: High attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and ability to handle confidential information.

Pay: $22.00 - $24.00 per hour
