A Plant Engineer specializing in tower cranes is responsible for the end-to-end lifecycle of heavy lifting equipment on construction sites. This role bridges the gap between field operations and technical engineering, focusing on safety, mechanical reliability, and structural integrity.
Key Responsibilities
-
Site Planning & Installation:
Oversee the erection, dismantling, and modification of tower cranes. This includes marking crane bases, installing ties according to engineering drawings, and commissioning the units for operation.
-
Inspections & Certification:
Conduct statutory inspections and load testing to verify structural integrity and operational capacity. You must ensure all equipment complies with international safety standards and local regulations (e.g., UAE or UK standards like LOLER/PUWER).
-
Maintenance Management:
Develop and implement preventive maintenance schedules to minimize downtime. This includes managing spare parts inventory and coordinating with suppliers for technical support.
-
Technical Troubleshooting:
Diagnose and resolve complex mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic issues. This often involves configuring PLCs, frequency converters, and safety systems like anti-collision technology.
-
Safety & Compliance:
Coordinate with site teams to develop lifting plans, risk assessments, and restricted movement zones for crane jibs.
-
Documentation:
Maintain accurate service records, inspection logs, and incident reports for management and regulatory review.
Required Skills & Qualifications
-
Education:
A Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering is typically required.
-
Experience:
Most roles require 8+ years of hands-on experience in tower crane engineering or high-rise construction plant operations.
-
Technical Knowledge:
-
In-depth understanding of load charts, rigging practices, and control systems.
-
Proficiency in reading electrical schematics and technical manuals.
-
Familiarity with PLC programming and drive systems.
-
Soft Skills:
Strong problem-solving, leadership for mentoring technicians, and clear communication for coordinating with project managers.
-
Physical Fitness:
Ability to work at heights and in various weather conditions on-site.
