Winston-Salem State University (WSSU) is seeking a skilled and motivated Plumber to join the Facilities Maintenance team for the Department of Housing & Residence Life.
The Plumber is a critical role that will support the maintenance and repair of plumbing systems within our student housing facilities, ensuring a safe, comfortable, and well-maintained environment for our students and staff. This also includes callback work if needed.
Responsibilities of the Plumber include:
  • Repair, replace, maintain and install plumbing fixtures and equipment
  • Perform repair and preventative maintenance on water, gas and sanitary sewer in University buildings and grounds
  • Inspect work sites and review blueprints to identify safety concerns, determine necessary equipment, and develop a plan for the necessary work
  • Assemble, build, repair, and modify plumbing fixtures and equipment where necessary
  • Maintain and utilize hand and power tools safely and effectively
  • Performance maintenance on water, valves, traps, basins, drains, faucets, lavatories and sinks
  • Review blueprints and locate underground piping in order to develop a plan or layout for the work needed
  • Dismantle or cut through structural and other physical barriers in order to gain access for repairs or new installations
  • Alter or rebuild plumbing fixtures or equipment as necessary and make recommendations for a new installation or replacement if necessary
  • Repair damaged sinks, toilets, showers, water heaters, faucets, valves, and drinking fountains
  • Fit gaskets, couplings, traps, and valves, and solder or weld connections to seal joints where necessary
  • Work with the Facilities Management team to address maintenance needs and contribute to a collaborative environment focused on improving the student living experience.
  • Respond to service requests promptly, completing work orders and ensuring all maintenance issues are resolved effectively
  • Adhere to safety standards, building codes, and environmental regulations while performing tasks, ensuring the safety of students, staff, and the general public.
  • Support Electrical and HVAC repair and maintenance as part of the Facilities Maintenance team to ensure proper function across student housing facilities.
