Job Summary

The Research Assistant/ Associate is responsible for assigned activities in the research laboratory with limited supervision from the Laboratory Supervisor or Principal Investigator (P.I.). The candidate is responsible for performing high-level laboratory procedures relating to the laboratory's ongoing program and completing documentation of experimental data in a timely fashion. Assists with monitoring inventory and ordering of laboratory supplies. This position will conduct research related to hemostasis, thrombosis, inflammation, and cancer biology involving the use of cutting-edge functional genomics, biochemical, and molecular biology techniques, and mouse handling.

The Research Assistant/Associate role will be filled according to the education, technical skills, direct relevant research experience, and qualifications of the selected candidate. Refer to Required Education and Experience.


Key Responsibilities

  • Conducts experiments, collects, and analyzes data.
  • Oversees the maintenance of lab supplies, equipment, and inventory control.
  • Maintains lab notebooks and records, supplies, and samples in a well-organized and accurate manner.
  • Participates in biosafety and biomedical research-related training and maintains compliance with all safety training and requirements.
  • Acts as a liaison to other departmental personnel, outside investigators, and vendors.
  • Acts as a leader for lab programs and staff in assigned areas.
  • Activities include performing all necessary biochemical, molecular, and cell biology techniques to conduct the research.
  • Responsible for laboratory activities to isolate and culture the cells under sterile conditions.
  • Responsible for handling small laboratory animals and performing various research procedures, including genotyping, maintaining mice colonies, blood collection, tail-vein and other injections, and surgical procedures.
  • Responsible for performing research work semi-independently with guidance from the mentor after the initial training (no formal training, learned during performing the job functions).
  • Other duties as assigned.


Required Qualifications

Research Assistant

  • Bachelor's degree in Life Sciences, Biochemistry, Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, or related field.
  • Previous work experience in a research laboratory is preferred.


Research Associate

  • Master's degree in Life Sciences, Biochemistry, Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, or related field.
  • Two (2) years of work experience in a research laboratory.
  • Direct experience related to this research field is preferred.


Research Associate Senior

  • M.S. or Ph.D. in Life Sciences, Biochemistry, Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, or related field.
  • Three (3) years of work experience in a research laboratory.
  • Direct experience related to this research field is preferred.

Additional Information

The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.

This position is security-sensitive and subject to Texas Education Code Section 51.215, which authorizes the employer to obtain criminal history record information. Applicants selected must be able to show proof of eligibility to work in the United States by time of hire.

Clinical Position Requirements

Clinical positions require pre-screening through our Occupational Health department, including a drug test. Employees are required to obtain annual influenza vaccines.
