PRINCIPAL TRANSPORTATION ENGINEER, CALTRANS

Under the general direction of the California High Speed Rail Authority’s (Authority) Director of Engineering Services, the Principal Transportation Engineer provides executive technical leadership for high-speed rail and system engineering activities within the Authority, including, but not limited to, track, train control, traction power, Overhead Contact System (OCS), telecommunications, trainsets, and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition systems. The incumbent oversees the development, enforcement, and maintenance of technical specifications, requirements, standards, and system integration processes to ensure compliance with federal, state, and Authority policies and procedures. The incumbent leads and directs multidisciplinary teams, including project managers, engineers, and consultants, coordinating complex subsystem interfaces and fostering interdisciplinary collaboration to deliver integrated, operable, and certifiable rail systems. The incumbent administers rail and system engineering programs and projects, plans and directs the work of large staff of engineers and consultants, analyzes complex technical and operational issues, and takes decisive action to resolve them. The incumbent ensures alignment with transportation planning, economics, environmental, and community considerations, and supports the Department’s safety, health, Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO), and labor relations objectives, while effectively communicating program goals, preparing reports, and representing the Authority to internal and external stakeholders.

Working Conditions

Part-time telework is available for this position for California residents based on the requirements of the position. Hiring interviews may be available virtually, using teleconferencing or video conferencing options.

While working on site, the incumbent works in a professional office environment, in a climate-controlled cubicle which may fluctuate in temperature and is under artificial light. Incumbent will be required to use a computer, mouse, and video display terminal and will be required to sit for long periods of time at a computer screen. Employee must be able to focus for long periods of time, multi-task, adapt to changes in priorities and complete tasks or projects with short notice. Employees may be required to travel outside of their workstation to perform general tasks.

The High-Speed Rail Authority headquarters building is located in downtown Sacramento on the corner of 8th and L Street. We are located one block away from the 8th and Capitol light rail stop, as well as the 7th and Capitol light rail stop.
