QC Specialist (Ship Repair)

Job Summary

The QA/QC professional is responsible for establishing, implementing, and maintaining a robust Quality Management System (QMS) to ensure all ship repair, activation, and engineering activities are executed in compliance with applicable standards, classification society rules, regulatory requirements, and client specifications.

The role ensures quality is embedded across planning, execution, inspection, and delivery stages, with a strong focus on risk management, process improvement, and preventive quality practices. Acting as an independent authority on quality matters, the position supports operational teams while promoting a quality-driven culture across the yard to minimize rework, enhance compliance, and ensure consistent project delivery.

Key Responsibilities

1. Quality Management System (QMS) & Governance

Ensure full alignment between operational practices and the approved Quality Manual and QMS.

Maintain, implement, and continuously improve the QMS in line with ISO standards, class rules, regulatory, and client requirements.

Plan, lead, and participate in internal and external audits (classification societies, client, and regulatory audits).

Ensure effective document control, traceability, and retention of all quality records.

2. Quality Planning, Inspection & Control

Develop, review, and implement Inspection and Test Plans (ITPs), method statements, and quality procedures.

Ensure inspections and testing at all required stages of work execution.

Monitor workmanship quality across:

Mechanical systems

Fabrication & welding

Electrical systems

Blasting & painting/coating

NDT & dimensional control

Installation activities

Coordinate inspections with classification surveyors and client representatives.

3. Compliance, Risk & Material Control

Ensure compliance with:

Classification society rules (LR, DNV, ABS)

Statutory and regulatory requirements

Project specifications

Identify and manage quality risks, maintaining a risk and opportunity register.

Ensure full material traceability, including:

Material certificates

Test reports

Welding consumables

Vendor documentation

4. Non-Conformance & Corrective Actions

Identify non-conformities and raise NCRs (Non-Conformance Reports).

Lead root cause analysis (RCA) and implement corrective and preventive actions.

Track recurring issues and implement measures to reduce cost of poor quality (COPQ) and rework.

5. Process Improvement & Performance Monitoring

Optimize quality processes to improve efficiency, consistency, and compliance.

Establish and monitor quality KPIs aligned with business objectives.

Drive a shift from reactive inspection to proactive quality assurance.

6. Operational Integration & Stakeholder Coordination Collaborate with:

Project Managers

Engineering teams

Production & Operations

Procurement & subcontractors

Integrate quality requirements into planning, execution, and procurement workflows.

Provide technical quality guidance to ensure compliance with specifications and standards.

7. Leadership, Training & Quality Culture

Promote a strong quality culture across the organization.

Train supervisors, inspectors, and production teams on:

Quality procedures

Inspection standards

Best practices

Maintain independence and uphold quality standards under schedule and operational pressure.

Required Qualifications/ Skills/ Experience:

Education Bachelor’s Degree / Diploma in:

Mechanical Engineering

Marine Engineering

Naval Architecture

Electrical Engineering (preferred for multi-discipline roles)

Experience

5–12+ years of QA/QC experience in:

Ship repair / shipbuilding / marine engineering

Offshore / oil & gas / heavy engineering industries

Hands-on experience in:

Dry docking, vessel repair, or conversion projects

Yard or site-based QA/QC operations

Experience working with classification societies (LR, DNV, ABS, BV, etc.)

Proven experience in audits, inspections, and quality system implementation

Strong knowledge of:

QMS & ISO standards (ISO 9001)

Welding standards (AWS, ASME)

NDT methods and inspection techniques

Coating, blasting, and painting standards

Expertise in:

ITP preparation and review

Root Cause Analysis (RCA)

Risk assessment methodologies

Familiarity with:

Marine regulations and classification requirements

Material certification and traceability systems

ISO9001, AS9100, AS9110, or other globally recognized Quality Management Systems Internal Auditor training preferred
