- Specification Development & Control
- Define and document product quality specifications (physical properties, dimensions, glazing, color consistency, strength, porosity, etc.).
- Maintain drawings, color charts, glazing formulas, firing schedules.
- Review and revise specifications as needed in collaboration with R&D / process engineering.
- Raw Materials Inspection & Control
- Accept/reject raw materials (clay bodies, glazes, pigments, additives, etc.) based on incoming quality.
- Ensure supplier compliance with required material standards.
- Monitor moisture content, particle size distribution, chemical composition of raw materials.
- In-Process Quality Monitoring
- Check product status at various stages: forming, drying, glazing, firing, finishing.
- Monitor kiln performance (temperature uniformity, firing cycles), glaze application, drying cracks, warpage, defects.
- Use statistical process control (SPC) tools to track process shifts.
- Finished Goods Inspection
- Inspect final products for defects: chips, cracks, glaze defects, sizing, color match, flatness, warpage, etc.
- Perform physical and mechanical tests as required (strength, abrasion resistance, water absorption).
- Ensure aesthetic quality and conformance to client/customer requirements.
- Testing & Laboratory Work
- Oversee or conduct chemical, physical, mechanical testing.
- Maintain laboratory equipment, ensure calibration.
- Test glaze composition, firing defects, hardness, thermal shock, etc.
- Quality Management System & Standards Compliance
- Ensure compliance with ISO 9001 or other relevant standards.
- Maintain all QA documentation: SOPs, inspection reports, non-conformance reports, corrective actions.
- Participate in internal and external audits.
- Corrective & Preventive Actions (CAPA)
- Investigate defects / customer complaints, root cause analysis.
- Implement corrective actions to fix problems.
- Propose preventive measures to avoid recurrence (e.g. changes in process, training, machinery adjustment).
- Continuous Improvement
- Analyze quality data (defects, rejection rates, yield losses) to identify areas for improvement.
- Work with process engineering, production, maintenance to optimize processes (e.g. firing schedules, glaze application, drying).
- Implement lean or other improvement initiatives.
- Training & Awareness
- Train production / line staff in quality standards, defect recognition, proper handling.
- Promote awareness of quality and customer expectations.
- Ensure staff understand inspection criteria.
- Documentation & Reporting
- Maintain records of quality checks, test results, audit findings.
- Produce regular quality reports: defect rates, rejection levels, process capability, root cause analysis.
- Report trends and metrics to QA Manager / management.
- Equipment Maintenance & Calibration
- Ensure measurement and inspection instruments are properly calibrated and maintained.
- Keep track of calibration schedules, replacement, upkeep of lab and inspection tools.
