Quantity Surveyor

We are looking for an interior design and fit-out quantity surveyor (QS) manages the financial and contractual aspects of an interior construction project, from the initial cost estimates to the final account settlement. This role requires balancing the client's design vision with the project's financial constraints.

Key responsibilitiesPre-contract stage:

  • Cost planning and feasibility studies: Provides early-stage cost advice and develops initial budget estimates based on the client's brief and concept designs.
  • Tender and procurement management: Prepares detailed tender documents, including Bills of Quantities (BoQs), for subcontractors and suppliers. The QS then evaluates the tender submissions to ensure they are competitive and compliant.
  • Supplier and subcontractor negotiations: Negotiates with vendors to ensure cost-effective pricing for materials, finishes, and labor.
  • Risk assessment: Identifies and provides advice on potential financial risks, such as market fluctuations or project changes, and devises strategies to mitigate them.

Qualifications

  • Education: A bachelor's degree in Quantity Surveying, Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or a related field is typically required.
  • Professional certification: Professional accreditation from an organization like the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) is often highly valued by employers.
  • Experience: Proven experience in the construction or interior fit-out industry is essential, with more senior roles requiring a deeper understanding of interior finishes, materials, and bespoke elements.

Technical skills

  • Numerical and analytical skills: Excellent mathematical skills are necessary for accurate cost calculations, budgeting, and financial analysis.
  • Cost estimation software: Proficiency with software such as Microsoft Excel, Bluebeam, CostX, or other industry-specific estimation tools is often required.
  • Design and construction knowledge: A strong understanding of interior fit-out materials, construction methods, and design specifications is crucial for accurately valuing work.

Soft skills

  • Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication skills are vital for liaising with clients, designers, contractors, and other stakeholders.
  • Negotiation: Strong negotiation skills are essential for securing competitive rates and managing disputes.
  • Attention to detail: Meticulous attention to detail ensures accuracy in all cost calculations and contract documentation.
  • Problem-solving: The ability to analyze problems and devise practical solutions for cost and contractual issues is highly valued.
  • Collaboration: A successful QS must be a team player who can collaborate effectively with all project stakeholders to achieve the project's financial and design goals.
