The Criminal Defense Practice at NDS represents residents of Northern Manhattan who are charged with crimes and cannot afford to hire a lawyer. The Board consists of 15 members who are appointed by the Mayor, the City Council and Public Advocate or designated by the police commissioner. The Board is responsible for governing the agency. The Executive Director is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the agency. As the largest police oversight agency in the United States, the CCRB currently investigates approximately 4,500 complaints each year.<br>

The CCRB&rsquo;s Administrative Prosecution Unit prosecutes cases in which the CCRB Board substantiated a complaint and recommended that charges be brought against the subject officer. Currently, the unit is headed by a Chief Prosecutor and two Deputy Chief Prosecutors; and staffed with ten prosecutors; a Supervising Trial Preparation Assistant and two Trial Preparation Assistants; and two Administrative Assistants.
