The Sewa AmeriCorps program in Atlanta Chapter, Sewa International is an ongoing program that places AmeriCorps members as tutors and Supplementary Intervention Specialists (SIS) for children, ages 5-18, in Sewa ASPIRE tutoring programs in multiple apartment complexes in the Dekalb and Fulton Counties. The objective of the program is to improve the student's ability to read, write, comprehend, and speak in English, along with tutoring assistance in STEM subjects. The program is a unique combination of virtual and in-person connect program, where, during the week, the tutors teach the kids in online virtual classes and on Saturday they meet with the kids in person. The program aims to serve 240 students and have 120 students report increased academic performance each year. The program provides supplementary language intervention and tutoring of STEM subjects to improve academic performance for children. The program targets students who are falling behind in school and need extra help to succeed. The AmeriCorps members provide individualized tutoring and support to the students, as well as work with the students' parents and teachers to develop and implement academic plans. In addition, the tutors also engage the kids in group activities, games, planning and cultural activities to help develop their interpersonal skills.Sewa AmeriCorps Atlanta program started in 2022 and it is currently in its fourth year. 74% of the funding for the program comes from AmeriCorps and 26% of the funding comes from the public and corporate support. Sewa supplements this program by engaging summer interns, youth volunteers and organizing several events such as food drives and health camps for these communities.


Member Duties : RHT AmeriCorps members serve 675 hr in 7 months in a hybrid program.Virtual tutoring Mon-Thurs, In person meet on Sat. Hybrid program Dec 2025- May 2026. In person summer camp Jun 2026. Review curricula topics & assignments.Subject based academic tutoring of 8 - 9 students Mon-Thu.Coordinate with other tutors to plan lessons.Demonstrate academic competence in subject area,post lesson plans on shared google drive.Assist students with homework, projects, test preparation, papers, research.Assist students understand key concepts,learned in classroom.Track student’s learning progress.Facilitate problem-solving with curious mind & critical thinking skills.Collaborate effectively with site coordinators/supervisors to increase student performance.Attend weekly training and meetings.Plan and execute weekend fun activities for the kids onsite from time to time.Maintain timesheets & hours spent tutoring,site visits,training & get them approved by program director.
