Social Media Specialist

The social media manager is responsible for managing, developing, and implementing all aspects of MSU’s social media strategy and presence. The position will facilitate external communications with constituents such as prospective students and parents, alumni, donors and the general public both in the state and nationally. This position also facilitates internal communications with students, faculty, and staff. The position is focused on university-wide recruitment, retention, and reputation enhancement initiatives that support the objectives within MSU’s strategic plan.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Manage daily operation of all MSU social media platforms including MSU Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and YouTube.
  • Develop strategies for social media promotional campaigns and budgets supporting the goals of the university’s strategic plan. Leverage high-visibility events and activities to elevate and enhance the university’s accomplishments.
  • Collaborate with the visual creators to produce strategic social media content for wide audiences.
  • Working with a dashboard and leveraging analytics, develop plans for increasing engagement through content.
  • Execute communication strategies to reach our audience during a crisis. Consult with and support the Vice President of Communications and News Director on crisis communications.
  • Build partnerships across campus to ensure all social media efforts align and follow MSU’s social media policy. Provide training and consulting to campus constituents on social media best practices and MSU policies.
  • Spearhead onboarding and professional development for all new campus social media managers, as well as departmental interns, delivering comprehensive training on MSU brand guidelines, strategic content planning, and platform best practices to maintain a cohesive institutional voice.
  • In alignment with the digital marketing strategist, design, launch, and optimize paid advertising campaigns on platforms such as Meta and LinkedIn for campus and departments, leveraging audience insights, A/B testing, and performance analytics to maximize ROI and achieve enrollment, engagement, and branding objectives.
  • Oversee the financial and operational management of campus departments social media advertising, ensuring accurate billing, budget compliance, and optimal allocation of resources across concurrent campaigns.
  • Act as an ambassador for the communications office and the university within a fast paced and highly regarded team environment.

Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
  • Bachelor’s degree in a field related to writing, communications, marketing or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated experience creating and publishing high quality content on social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and other platforms in a professional setting.
  • Demonstrated experience writing social media copy for key target audiences to enhance awareness of MSU’s accomplishments.
  • Demonstrated experience developing targeted communications campaigns for social media platforms.
  • Experience with social media ad buying on multiple platforms.
  • Strong written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills: ability to clearly articulate concepts, establish and maintain working relationships with a culturally diverse population.

Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
  • Experience creating social media communication plans in higher education or complex multi-faceted organizations.
  • Experience using research tools such as surveys and/or focus groups and measuring results using analytics and available tools.
  • Experience filming and editing digital video and/or photography.
  • Experience teaching, training and supporting others in social media.
  • Demonstrated experience with web content management systems.
