Responsibilities*

• Collaborate on the implementation of the Abuse Prevention Initiative's (API) strategic plan, focusing on inpatient, outpatient, offsite and high-risk areas.
• Share 24/7 on-call coverage with one other social worker, responding to questions and providing direction over the phone to medical providers, social workers, CPS workers, and parents. On-call coverage is not required to be onsite.
• Educate faculty and staff in the areas of child abuse and neglect.
• Participate in departmental activities, including staff meetings, mandatory training, quality improvement activities, and participate in special projects as assigned.
• Attend and participate in monthly county child advocacy meetings with community partners.

Clinical Duties:

• Respond to child abuse and neglect and intimate partner violence case consultation requests referred to the Child Protection Team by medical staff, social workers, and outside agencies.
• Assess referred suspected cases of child abuse and neglect in conjunction with the Child Protection Team physicians.
• Facilitate multidisciplinary team meetings to discuss cases.
• Facilitate referrals to Children?s Protective Services on suspected cases of child abuse and neglect.
• Act as a liaison between hospital staff and Children's Protective Services and law enforcement on cases of child abuse and neglect.
• Assist staff in reporting cases of intimate partner violence and vulnerable adult abuse, when legally indicated.
• Facilitate a safe discharge from the hospital for children.
• Provide social work services (clinical assessment, intervention, referrals, consultations and continuity of care) for patients and families identified with an interpersonal violence history.

Required Qualifications*

• A Master's degree in Social Work from a school accredited by the Council of Social Work Education.
• Current clinical license to practice social work in the State of Michigan.
• Significant clinical practice experience in pediatric medical social work.
• Knowledge, background, and experience in child abuse and neglect identification, investigation, and evaluation; a working knowledge of the dynamics of intimate partner violence and best practices in screening, interventions and referrals; knowledge of vulnerable adult abuse and ability to provide consultation on these cases to hospital faculty and staff.
• Ability to identify and assess the psychosocial needs of adults on issues related to abuse/neglect and to vulnerability.
• Ability to identify and assess the psychosocial needs of neonate and children between the ages of birth through 18 years, including issues related to illness and hospitalization, growth and developmental needs, and community resources available and used by children and their families.

Desired Qualifications*

• Background in children's protective services or experience working/partnering with CPS is preferred.
  

Work Schedule

Current department hours are 8:30 am - 5:00 pm, Monday - Friday. There are also remote on-call hours required for this position. See responsibilities above for details.

Underfill Statement

This position may be underfilled at a lower classification depending on the qualifications of the selected candidate. Advancement through the career ladder at the Expert or Clinical Scholar Level is required for placement in the MSW Senior Classification

Union Affiliation

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the United Michigan Medicine Allied Professionals (UMMAP), which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours, and other terms and conditions of employment.
