The Solid Waste Operations Coordinator will lead a team of dedicated solid waste professionals in providing exceptional quality of life services for our community. This position plays a vital role in supporting the day-to-day operations and administration of our Solid Waste Division..
The Solid Waste Operations Coordinator is responsible for performing complex business operations in the oversight of the municipal solid waste, yard waste, and recycling collection and disposal operations. This position oversees the assignment of resources and the management of divisional work.
This work includes difficult technical and administrative work in determining collection route planning and operations. The role is also responsible for important public-focused work interacting with residents, business owners, contractors, and town staff.
Supervision is exercised over supervisory staff, field personnel and management of Cary’s Citizen’s Convenience Center.
Work is performed under the general supervision of the Solid Waste Division Manager.
If this opportunity excites you then we encourage you to apply!Oversees the supervision of collection teams; provides feedback and performance evaluations; coaches team leaders in leading their collection teams;
Reviews and makes recommendations for employee disciplinary action;
Meets with Solid Waste Expeditors and Team Leaders to plan and implement strategies for employee growth and development;
Organizes and facilitates interviews for external hires and internal transfers and promotions;
Assists in coordinating staff during emergency response; coordinates post-storm clean-up operations;
Monitors safety procedures for work crews, ensuring safety practices are followed and providing necessary safety training and equipment;
Interacts directly with residents and businesses to address community concerns;
Responds to elevated customer complaints directly or advises the Solid Waste Expeditor to resolve service concerns;
Works with the Solid Waste Division Manger to review new development plans and provides input on solid waste and refuse collection services;
Oversees development of all collection routes;
Initiates and manages procedural steps following an employee incident/accident;
Analyzes financial data and prepares budget estimates to ensure cost effective operations;
Manages division invoice payments and supply purchases.
Works with the procurement office for bidding solid waste, recycling, and yard waste operations professional service contracts;
Prepares data for contract negotiations and procurement functions;
Reviews and approves pay applications for professional services and term contract work;
Collaborates with county and state staff and contractors on solid waste operations projects, tasks and initiatives;
Recommends and implements changes in work procedures;
Coordinates with other town departments to support special events staffing;
Researches and develops data, and submits reports to regulatory agencies;
Develops and submits permit applications and modifications for review and submits to regulatory agencies including, but not limited to the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources;
Assists in preparing items for Cary staff reports and Council meetings.
Serves as a member of the Adverse Weather Emergency Response Team.
Collaborates interdepartmentally to notify citizens of various educational campaigns and informational notifications;
Performs other duties as assigned.
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to an associate’s degree from an accredited college with a specific focus on Solid Waste Management, Environmental Science, Business Administration or a related field, and 3-5 years of managerial experience.
Preferred Experience
Supervisory experience leading Solid Waste operations.
Requires drug testing and background check (which may include criminal check, education verification and credit history review) prior to employment
