Position Overview:
We are seeking a detail-oriented and experienced Staff Accountant with a strong background in nonprofit accounting practices. This role plays a critical part in maintaining the financial integrity of the organization, ensuring compliance with government funding requirements, and supporting accurate financial reporting.
The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience with government grant reimbursement processes, financial service reimbursement reporting, and familiarity with the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs (NJDCA) Green SAGE grant management system.
This is an on-site position. Limited remote work may be permitted on an occasional basis, as approved by leadership.
Key Responsibilities:
Financial Reporting & General Accounting:

Prepare and maintain accurate general ledger entries.

Perform monthly account reconciliations, including bank and grant accounts.

Assist with month-end and year-end closing processes.

Maintain supporting documentation for all financial transactions.

Support preparation of financial statements and internal reports.
Government Grants & Reimbursements:

Prepare and submit government grant reimbursement requests.

Create and compile financial service reimbursement reports in accordance with funding agency requirements.

Ensure expenditures are properly coded and aligned with grant budgets.

Maintain compliance with federal, state, and local funding guidelines.

Monitor grant budgets and assist program staff with financial reporting requirements.
NJDCA Green SAGE System:

Prepare and upload documentation into the NJDCA Green SAGE grant management system.

Ensure timely and accurate submission of required financial documentation.

Track and reconcile reimbursement status within the system.
Compliance & Audit Support:

Maintain organized and audit-ready documentation.

Assist in preparation for external audits and monitoring visits.

Ensure adherence to nonprofit accounting standards and internal controls.
Collaboration & Support:

Work closely with program staff to ensure proper documentation of expenses.

Support the Director of Finance and Accounting Manager in financial analysis and reporting.

Participate in process improvements to enhance financial efficiency and compliance.
Qualifications:
Education & Experience:

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required.

Minimum of 3–5 years of accounting experience, preferably within a nonprofit organization.

Demonstrated experience with government grant reimbursement processes.

Experience preparing financial service reimbursement reports.

Familiarity with NJDCA Green SAGE system strongly preferred.

Work Environment:
This is an on-site position based in Newark, NJ. Occasional remote work may be permitted with prior approval. The role requires consistent in-person collaboration with finance and program teams.
Compensation:
Salary is commensurate with experience, up to $75,000 annually. Comprehensive benefits package included.
