Junior Camp Counselor – Camp Givah (Summer 2026)

Reports To: Division Head

Supervises: Campers; may support CITs or helpers

Location: Camp Givah

Schedule: Full-time June 29 - August 21, 2026

Compensation: Based on experience

Position Overview

The Junior Camp Counselor works directly with campers to create a safe, fun, and supportive camp experience. Under the guidance of the Division Head, Junior Counselors are responsible for supervising campers, leading activities, supporting behavior, and helping the daily schedule run smoothly. This role is hands-on, active, and ideal for staff ready to take responsibility while still receiving mentorship and guidance.

Key Responsibilities

Camper Care & Supervision

  • Supervise a group of campers throughout the camp day.
  • Ensure camper safety during all activities, transitions, and daily swim.
  • Build positive relationships with campers and foster inclusion and belonging.

Activity Leadership

  • Lead or assist with games, group activities, and discussions.
  • Participate enthusiastically in camp programming, including learning, sports, art, singing, dance, and special events.
  • Encourage participation while respecting individual camper needs.

Behavior Support

  • Use positive behavior strategies and camp-approved language.
  • Redirect behavior calmly and consistently.
  • Ask for support from the Division Head when behaviors escalate or safety is a concern.

Daily Operations

  • Help keep the group on schedule and prepared for transitions.
  • Take attendance and assist with organization (water bottles, supplies, lineup).
  • Support lunch, snack, bathroom breaks, and cleanup.

Teamwork & Communication

  • Follow direction from the Division Head and camp leadership.
  • Communicate concerns, incidents, or patterns promptly.
  • Work cooperatively with fellow counselors and Direct Support Staff.

Inclusion & Values

  • Support campers with diverse needs using guidance from leadership.
  • Model kindness, patience, and respect.
  • Help reinforce camp values and Jewish learning throughout the day.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Experience working with children (camp, school, babysitting, youth programs).
  • Ability to follow structure, routines, and leadership direction.
  • Positive attitude, flexibility, and reliability.
  • Comfortable participating in daily swim supervision (especially with our younger campers.)

Preferred:

  • Prior camp or youth leadership experience.
  • Interest in education, child development, or youth work.
  • CPR/First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain).

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to be active outdoors for extended periods.
  • Comfortable walking across camp and participating in games and swim.
  • Ability to respond quickly in safety situations.
